SANTA FE ― Maxine and Dominique Toya, mother and daughter, and fourth and fifth generation potters from Jemez Pueblo, will demonstrate their work 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14 at Lyn A. Fox Fine Pueblo Pottery.

Dominique Toya will demonstrate clay techniques, and her mother Maxine will paint clay figurines. This demonstration comes a month before an exhibition of their work opens Aug. 12 at Fox Pueblo Pottery. The work of the Toya’s gives one the opportunity to trace the rich heritage of pueblo pottery to the present day.

Artist Maxine Toya, a master Jemez pueblo potter, began painting her family’s pottery at age 8 or 9. Continuing to paint throughout her high school years, Maxine attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) where she studied textiles and pottery.

Maxine’s daughter Dominique adheres to traditional pottery making and firing methods yet with a modern and youthful flair. Her main early teachers and influences were her grandmother Marie G. Romero and her mother. She studies now and fires with Nancy Youngblood, one of the preeminent and most historically important potters working today.

The event is free and open to the public.
