Tsankawi Unit To Remain Closed Due To Power Loss At Site

Bandelier News:

Bandelier National Monument’s Tsankawi Unit will remain closed due to power loss at the site. There is no projected re-opening date at this time.

“The power has not yet been restored to Tsankawi,” Superintendent Patrick Suddath said. “We’re working with our partners to fix the issue as soon as possible. Our visitor facilities at Tsankawi, namely the restrooms, need power to operate. We understand there is a lot of interest reopening the site, and we hope to do so as soon as we safely can.”

Tsankawi has been closed since April 2023. The closure was part of the larger interagency project to improve traffic flow and safety at the junction of N.M. 4 and East Jemez Road outside of White Rock. The Tsankawi Loop Trail was also re-routed around the ancestral pueblo site in accordance with the 2014 Tsankawi Unit Management Plan and commitments made to the Pueblo of San Ildefonso.

The rest of Bandelier remains open during the Tsankawi closure.

This includes:

  • Pueblo Loop Trail, Alcove House, Falls Trail and Bandelier Visitor Center in Frijoles Canyon;
  • Juniper and Ponderosa Campgrounds; and
  • Backcountry and frontcountry hiking trails at such locations as Burnt Mesa, Cerro Grande and Alamo Boundary.

Additional updates regarding Tsankawi will be provided via press release. They will also be shared to Bandelier’s website and social media accounts.
