A male and female were seriously injured and air lifted to area hospitals today after their vehicle left the roadway near Anderson Overlook and landed in the canyon.

“We’re still investigating this single-vehicle accident that occurred about 3:30 p.m. today at mile marker 5 on N.M. 502,” said Major Ken Johnson of the Santa Fe County Sheriffs Department during an interview at about 9 p.m. today.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. Johnson explained that the vehicle left the roadway and traveled about 100 feet down the embankment into the canyon. Both occupants sustained serious injuries, he said.

The age and identity of the occupants has not been released.

“The female was airlifted to UNM in Albuquerque and the male was airlifted to CHRISTUS St. Vincent in Santa Fe,” Johnson said, adding that he expects to have additional details to share by Tuesday afternoon.

Los Alamos police and fire rescue crews initially responded to the scene but turned the accident investigation over to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office because it occurred in their jurisdiction.

Traffic has been diverted to the truck route since the accident occurred and is expected to be diverted for at least another hour or two.
