STEP UP GALLERY News:
“Projection and Confession: Self-Portraits” is showing in Step Up Gallery at Mesa Public Library. The exhibit displays nearly 50 self-portraits of regional artists, many of which were created just for this show over the last four months.
Visitors to the gallery are asked to vote for the self-portrait they like best after viewing the show. In lieu of an opening reception, there will be a closing reception 2-3:30 p.m. on the last day of the exhibit, Saturday, Oct. 18. At that time, votes will be tallied and prizes given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as People’s Choice Awards.
Eighteen of the artists in the show hail from Los Alamos County. They and their portrait title include, “Self Portrait” by Allison Aiken, “A Pattern of Habits” by Tony Borek, “Set in Stone” by Bonnie Dickman, “All Color is Accidental” by Britton Donharl, “Shame” by Jenna Garcia, “Enter Softly” by Jeannie Hope Gibson, “Unflinching” by Katy Korkos, “Grrrrrrrr” by Charlotte Lehman, “Pieces of Me” by Marjorie Madsen, “The Bride” by Rosalia Olivas, “Invisible” by Kathi Geoffrion Parker, “Selfie with Mask” by Rachel Pearson, “Cracking Bonnie” by Bonnie Peterson, “Through My Eyes, Self Portrait” by Pat Pitcher, “Hard Knox” by Christina Rodriguez, “I am Here” by Gloria Sharp, “Symphony, of Sorts, in D Major” by Darla Graff Thompson, and “Daydreams” by Jocelyn Warner. Artists from across the state are participating as well.
In the Sept. 19 edition of Santa Fe New Mexican’s Pasatiempo Magazine, an article was published about the exhibit titled “Mirror Image” by Brian Sanford. The article focuses on interviews with three of the show’s artists, Harriette Tsosie (Albuquerque), Beverly Branch (Carson) and Darla Graff Thompson of Los Alamos. Additional self-portrait paintings shown in the article includes “Convergent Evolution” by Wendy Ahlm (Albuquerque), and Los Alamos artists’ self-portraits, “Invisible” by Kathi Geoffrion Parker and “I am Here” by Gloria Sharp.
The public is invited to attend the closing reception and refreshments will be served.
Step Up Gallery (https://stepupgallery.org) is on the top level of Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos at 2400 Central Ave. The gallery is open during regular library hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is no fee for entry.
