Weck’s has decided to postpone opening a restaurant in Los Alamos for at least six months.
Weck’s Santa Fe owner and licensee Michael Dennis explained during an interview with the Los Alamos Daily Post that he had come very close to finalizing negotiations to open a restaurant at Smith’s Marketplace.
“We really like Los Alamos and think it is a great place to open one of our restaurants but an opportunity presented itself in Farmington that was just too good to pass up,” he said. “However, we fully intend to look at Los Alamos again in the coming months.”
Weck’s Restaurants serves breakfast and lunch and is renowned for serving large portions. The name Weck’s is a shortened form of the original owner’s last name, Weckerly. Doug Weckerly opened the first Weck’s restaurant in 1991 in Albuquerque and followed with two more before selling the local chain in 2004 to restaurateur Art Kaplan and his wife Toya. Today there are seven Weck’s restaurants in Albuquerque, one in Rio Rancho, one in Los Lunas and one in Santa Fe.
The restaurant’s motto is “A full bellied tradition since 1991” and its mission statement reads in part: “We will consistently serve our community great tasting foods, promptly and politely. We will greet all our customers with a smile and provide them with courteous service in a clean and orderly environment. We will do this with the knowledge that if we take care of business today, we will build business for tomorrow.”
The Farmington Weck’s is scheduled to open in May and sometime after that the owner intends to take another look at Los Alamos, he said.
