I often recommend the use of a height adjustable desk to my patients as a way to switch things up during the day.
Moving from standing to sitting throughout the day is a great way to remind us to check-in with how our body is feeling, do our stretches and change posture. A study in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management found that workers who used standing desks reported better mood, improved productivity, better concentration and decreased upper back and neck pain.
In addition, physiological studies on workers who use standing desks show an overall improvement in circulation and critical thinking ability.
The best way to start with any big change in your workspace is to introduce it slowly and continue to have sitting/standing intervals until you find the best combination for your body. This is why adjustable height desks or chairs are the best choice. Too much of any one position can become a problem. Work up to a total of 4 hours per day.
You will also want to get a good standing mat and comfortable shoes. As far as posture is concerned, adjust your computer so that you can focus on keeping your eyes forward, shoulders back and chin slightly tucked. Finally, make sure you move more while standing. Squatting, lunging, engaging your core and balancing are all great ways to engage your body and mind while working in the standing position.
