Fort Marcy will be the ultimate destination this morning, Aug. 30, for a spectacular and historic event to celebrate the 100th raising of Zozobra. Adding to the excitement, a magnificent 135-foot hot air balloon, designed in a special shape, will be inflated for the very first time.
Festivities began at 7 a.m. when the balloon was inflated and stayed tethered and raised onto his pole.
The burning of Santa Fe’s most memorable icon, Zozobra, also known as “Old Man Gloom”, has been a cherished tradition in Santa Fe for a century, symbolizing the burning away of hardships and worries. This year, the celebration reaches new heights—literally—with the addition of a 135-foot hot air balloon that promises to captivate spectators for years to come.
