County Council Proclaims July Park And Recreation Month

Los Alamos County Council proclaimed July “Park and Recreation Month” during its meeting Tuesday. County Councilor David Reagor read the proclamation:

WHEREAS, parks improve the mental health of visitors by increasing cognitive performance, alleviating illnesses, and providing the therapeutic benefits of reconnecting us with nature and each other; and,

WHEREAS, recreation programs encourage physical activity by maintaining hiking trails, swimming pools, and ice rinks; organizing sports; and providing activities that integrate movement into the lives of residents every week; and,

WHEREAS, parks and recreation programs are an integral part of communities throughout this country by providing economic prosperity and healthy meals, nutrition services, and education activities critical to childhood development; and,

WHEREAS, providing quality parks and facilities requires constant effort, from daily maintenance to large construction projects, as demonstrated through the rich list of events offered, the recent accessibility work at Piñon Park and 37th Street Playground, the repairs to the main pool at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, the upgrades to the ice rink, and so much more; and,

WHEREAS, Los Alamos County Community Services has been named a 2026 National Gold Medal Award finalist for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management, placing our parks and recreation system among the top agencies in the country; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. House of Representatives has designated July as Park and Recreation Month.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim July 2026 to be “Park & Recreation Month in Los Alamos County” and I ask our citizens to get outside and enjoy the multitude of special programs, activities and celebrations planned through our Community Services Department.
