WASHINGTON, D.C. The Santa Fe Opera began Saturday performing composer John Adams’s Doctor Atomic.
 
This summer’s performances mark the first time the opera is produced in New Mexico, the epicenter of the opera. Doctor Atomic concentrates on the weeks just before the July 1945 Trinity Test, the first test of a nuclear weapon. With a libretto by Peter Sellars, the opera is a powerful interpretation in words and music of the scientific, political, moral, and ethical tensions of the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

The community is invited to the opening reception for Janice Parker Muir’s solo exhibition, “Visualizations of Earth and Sky Music,” 5-7 p.m., July 19 at the Karen Wray Gallery in downtown Los Alamos.

Muir is a local artist who works with pastels, acrylics and stained glass.

“The sky and earth create their own type of music. I hope my paintings help the viewer resonate with the places that I have loved,” Muir said. Read More

LALT Members Gather For Work Party Saturday

Los Alamos Little Theatre members gathered for a work party Saturday, July 14 to perform maintenance on the grounds around the Performing Arts Center. LALT manages the PAC for Los Alamos County and is responsible for upkeep on some aspects of the building and grounds. The LALT team trimmed trees, pulled weeds, laid down wire mesh to prevent skunks from burrowing under the building, and replaced 16 old, degraded railroad ties that were part of the landscaping. LALT Board member Dave Olivas organized the work party and his wife, Mary Lou, provided lunch for the volunteer workers. LALT is a 501(c)3
