SANTA FE  General Director Charles MacKay announced Tuesday that Gayletha Nichols, executive director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and member of Santa Fe Opera’s teaching staff during the last two seasons, is the new director designate of the Apprentice Program for Singers.

Sunday, Oct. 8, local artist and educator Liz Martineau will offer an Earth Art Workshop for adults and children at the Los Alamos Nature Center.
 
Based on the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy, Earth Art provides participants inspiration to create their own works of art using natural materials. The workshop is $8 for individuals and $10 for a pair of artists working together. Advance registration is available at www.peecnature.org.

Rose Chocolatier is hosting a reception Friday night for local artist, Don Cavness. Cavness paints abstracts and landscapes with palette knife and oils, intertwining color, movement, texture, creating a three-dimensional sense.
 
The show opens at 5 p.m. and Don will be on hand to talk about his works. Please stop in and see the show and meet the artist.
 
Cavness has painted with palette knife for more than 40 years, having studied with major artists Sylvia Gormley, Ramon Kelley, Dean Howell, and Helene Pfeffer.

The fourth annual Los Alamos Artists Studio Tour is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 and noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

This free, self-guided tour will take visitors into the studios of nine of Los Alamos and White Rock’s talented artists, in addition to two art classes from UNM-Los Alamos. Each stop offers something new and exciting.

At ProjectY cowork at 150 Central Park Square, guests will see a sample of each artist’s work during the hours of the Tour, or come to the reception 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 to meet the artists, plan your stops, and enjoy some live music.

The community is invited to attend the Los Alamos High School Olions Student One-Acts.
 
Student actors will be showcasing several student-written and directed one-acts, as well as two one-acts that will be competing at the state International Thespian Society Competition.
 
Performances are 7 p.m. Oct. 5-7, with a 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 7. Tickets are $7 and $5 for kids/seniors. On preview night, Oct. 5, tickets are $5 for all.
