By RUSS GORDON

So, can you dig jazz? Bebop? The kind of music made famous by saxophone monsters like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Lester Young and Ben Webster? If you don’t really know the music of these legends, just come on out to Ashley Pond at 7 tonight and listen to a man critics call the “Prince of Bebop,” Greg Abate.

Bebop became famous in the ‘40s into the ‘50s, coming from the scat singing of folks like Dizzy Gillespie. He would sing nonsensical lyrics, such a lyric as “bebop”. There Read More

Family Secrets Make Up ‘City Island’ Plot

Review by KELLY DOLEJSI

“If we only knew each other’s secrets, what comforts we should find.” So says John Churton Collins, who has nothing to do with this week’s screening at Mesa Public Library. Nevertheless, “City Island” (2009, PG-13), echoes the long-dead English literary critic’s pithy dictum.

Writer/director Raymond De Felitta’s farcical drama centers, as all good farcical dramas should, on a family. Families are always full of buffoonery and ridiculously improbable situations, and the film’s Rizzo family is Read More

This Week at the Reel Deal

Column by JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal

This week we are opening Maleficent, andA Million Ways to Die in the West. We will hold X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, and Blended. Blended has only one matinee each day so do check our schedule. Million Dollar Arm will end this Thursday.

From what I’ve seen of our two new movies, Maleficent lead by Angelina Jolie, and Elle Fanning, should be great fun for all ages while A Million Ways to Die in the West is both hilarious and vulgar, so I would give it a fairly strong R rating. Read More

By JASON FRAZIER

Angkor Wat was first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia. It is the largest religious monument in the world.

Construction on Angkor Wat first began in the 12th Century AD and became the largest preindustrial city in the world measuring at least 1,000 square kilometers. Today, Angkor Wat is much more than just a bunch of old buildings. An entire community of people still live within the protected area.

There are houses, schools, restaurants and shops. Angkor Wat is a UNESCO World Heritage Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” may fall into the same genre of superhero movies as “Spiderman 2”, which played last week here in town, but that is where any similarity between the two films ends.

Admittedly, this is an entertaining genre but my qualifications critiquing it are few. Like many people, I don’t have the backstory on these characters (especially Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Wolverine, even Professor X and Magneto) beyond what the film itself tells us.
