This Week at the Reel Deal
Column by JIM O’DONNELL In general, I thought the 86th Academy Awards went well. I think everyone who won a golden statue deserved it although I was disappointed that American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and August:Osage County went home empty handed.
It was a shock really, but I guess there are only so many Oscars to go around. Read More

Hannemann’s Music CornerThe guitar is a truly amazing instrument that allows you to play music as simple or as complex as you like in any style that suits your fancy. However, no matter what kind of music you are interested in, there are certain fundamentals that must be learned.
Since the guitar is a musical instrument, you need to learn to read music. You also need to know about keys and scales.
Since the guitar is a chord instrument, you need to learn about chords ─ how to recognize them, how to build them and how to use them.

Cinema Cindy Reviews: ‘Philomena’
“Philomena”“Philomena” was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with nominations for Best Picture of 2013, Actress in a Leading Role, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay and I heartily agree with these nominations.
It is a fine film, based on a true story. Judy Dench is wonderful in the title role.
The story puts an aging, faithful, Irish Catholic woman, a retired nurse, who wants to find her son, into the hands of a jaded, self-professed atheistic, famous journalist who is after her story. The two play off each other

Cinema Cindy Reviews: The 2014 Oscars
Cinema Cindy Reviews: The 2014 OscarsFirst off, I must say that the one category I felt the most passion about this year was Best Original Screenplay and I am ecstatic the Academy felt as I did, that “Her” was worthy of that award.
This fine screenplay won for subtly exploring human intimacy, how we fall in love, whether artificial intelligence could ever be a substitute for another human being, and showing a lonely soul learning to open his heart. In that way it reminded me of “Lars and the Real Girl.” The screenplay was masterful. congratulations Read More

‘Ace in the Hole’ Grim But Compelling
Movie poster. Courtesy/FMPL
Review by KELLY DOLEJSI
Need a pick-me-up? Then don’t watch “Ace in the Hole” (1951, unrated). But if you can take it, this black-and-white classic tells a great story while it teaches one of those grim life lessons.
Journalist Chuck Tatum (Kirk Douglas) is on the outs. He used to rake in the bucks, but hard times and personal proclivities have him stuck in small-time Albuquerque, working for an editor who wants him to, of all things, tell the truth.
This goes against his every fiber. But he toes the line until, on his way to cover a snake hunt, he happens Read More

Albuquerque Novelist Darynda Jones Shares Writing Experiences at Authors Speak Thursday

Romance novels get a bum rap. It is argued that the plot lines are silly and always involve an innocent, beautiful girl and a handsome, tortured man. These books, with red and pink-colored covers and titles in swirly fonts, always seem to be tucked in back corners of bookstores or libraries. It seems appropriate, because this genre of fiction is more guilty pleasure than literature.
The thing is no one seems to care. It has been noted that romance novel sales have shot up in recent years. Maybe that is because writers are spicing Read More
