The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) announces a special evening of live music and stunning planetarium visuals in celebration of it 25th anniversary 7-8 p.m. Friday, April 25. Music Under the Stars will feature a performance by the Los Alamos Big Band, set against the magical backdrop of the stars.

Following the performance, PEEC will host its 25th Anniversary Earth Day Festival 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at Los Alamos Nature Center, 2600 Canyon Road.

Daily Postcard: Plateau Fence Lizard Basks In Sunshine

Daily Postcard: A plateau fence lizard, also known as a Pajarito fence lizard, basks in the sun recently from the canyon side of the ‘balcony’ at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s (PEEC), Los Alamos Nature Center on Canyon Road. According to PEEC, these lizards live in Northern New Mexico and are especially fond of pine trees. They are not venomous or poisonous. They are active during the day, forage twice daily, and hibernate from November to April. The characteristic blue throat patch is visible on this male, but the blue on its belly is hidden. The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) invites New Mexicans to the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) for readings of the winning and honorable mention poems from the 2025 DCA Ekphrastic Poetry Contest.

Last fall, NMDCA divisions across New Mexico selected 15 works of art that showcase the best of their collections, giving New Mexico residents an opportunity to respond to each work with an ekphrastic poem. Learn about Pueblo history and the site of Kuaua through pottery making 10 a.m.– 4 p.m., Saturdays – Wednesdays, May 3–7, 2025, and May 10–14, at Coronado Historic Site.

Deadline Approaching For Los Alamos Department Of Public Utilities Essay Contest

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is conducting an essay contest for high school students as part of an effort organized by Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS).

A local student may receive sponsorship to attend a summer leadership camp and scholarship program in Idaho called the ICUA Youth Rally, but only if they get their essay submitted no later than May 2.
