44th Annual Tour de Los Alamos Is Sunday

SPORTS News:

The 44th Annual Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race takes place Sunday morning. This race begins on Trinity Drive in downtown Los Alamos with eight different start times, depending on the category of racer.

A car will lead out each race group in a neutral parade that goes over the Diamond Drive bridge toward Los Alamos National Laboratory. Once through the Laboratory VAP, the race begins at Casa Grande Drive, when the lead vehicle leaves the group of racers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — New Mexico ranked sixth in the nation in the rate of women murdered by men, with a rate of 1.71 per 100,000, according to the new Violence Policy Center (VPC) study When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2014 Homicide Data.

Police are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the following female suspect in the above surveillance footage.

Community and Historical Society Discuss Second Episode of WGN’s ‘Manhattan’

There was another amazing turnout for the Los Alamos Historical Society’s viewing of the second episode of WGN’s new series, “Manhattan,” a fictionalized look at life in Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.

Two Sandia Researchers Win Nation’s Most Prestigious ‘Early Career’ Awards

Of eight DOE researchers selected to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), two were researchers at Sandia National Laboratories.

The awards, presented at a White House ceremony in mid-December, are the U.S. government’s most prestigious commendation for scientists and engineers at early stages in their career. PECASE winners — this year, there were 67 — receive up to five years of funding from their agency to advance their research.

Prescribed Fire Planned for Santa Fe National Forest

Fire managers at Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct a pile prescribed fire Aug. 18 to Sept. 28 on the Jemez Ranger District.

The Los Griegos pile prescribed burn may be conducted only on favorable days as conditions allow. A total of 500 acres of piles may be treated in an area adjacent to the Sierra Los Pinos community, 17 miles southwest of Los Alamos. Small blocks of land may be treated each day to decrease the daily smoke volume.

Kiwanis Presents Sholarship to Jing Xie

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club recently presented Jing Xie with a scholarship. From left, Xiaohong Shen, mom; Michelle Xie, sister; Jing Xie  and Kiwanis President Karen Kendall. Xie was recognized as an enthusiastic community volunteer since she arrived in Los Alamos in 2006. She volunteered at the Mesa Public Library in her elementary school years. During her high school career, Xie volunteered in Teen Court for three years serving as an attorney and member of the Jury. She also has served as a Youth Leader for Cafe Scientifique and sent birthday cards to members at the Betty Ehart Center. Read More
