Los Alamos High School Student Council members organized a special Friday night candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown. Conn.

About 50 people gathered in the cold at Ashley Pond Park to honor the children, teachers and administration staff who lost their lives in the terrible tragedy.

A Chat With Pet Pangaea Owner Cyndi Wells

Cyndi Wells is the owner of Pet Pangaea. Wells started Pet Pangaea in early 2005. Since that time, Wells has been searching for a location to build a store. Recently, I sat down with Wells and discussed the state of small business ownership in Los Alamos. 

Wells came to Los Alamos in 2000 for a post doctorial position at Los Alamos National Laboratory and became a technical staff member. She has a PhD in Chemistry.

County Budget Tightening Puts Capital Projects on Hold

At the Dec. 11 County Council meeting, Council Chair Sharon Stover asked County Administrator Harry Burgess to explain why several capital expenditure items were removed from the tickler and agenda.

Burgess explained that capital improvement projects and other pending actions by Council that involve large expenditures of money were temporarily being put on hold.

The County’s budget was predicated by Los Alamos National Laboratory budget concerns. The actual LANL expenditures were lower than the level anticipated by the County.

“Small businesses form the backbone of any vibrant community and we realize the unique challenges faced by small business in Los Alamos and want to help,” County Administrator Harry Burgess said.

 County officials share activities that indicate the long-awaited Trinity Site Revitalization Project is in fact underway.

Three Car Crash Slows Evening Commute on Trinity

A three car crash occured at Trinity Drive and Timber Ridge Road at approximately 5:25 p.m. today. Two drivers in sedans involved in the wreck were transported to Los Alamos Medical Center for possible treatment.

State and Federal Officials Reject N.M. 502 Plans

The New Mexico Department of Transportation, (NMDOT), and the Federal Highway Administration, (FHWA), in a letter dated Nov 30, have rejected the Los Alamos County’s proposed alternative for the N.M. 502 Improvement Project (see link to letter below.)

This means that the project will not receive the $3.8 million in funding that the NMDOT and FHWA have programmed for Fiscal Year 2014 unless new plans are drawn up that are acceptable to NMDOT and FHWA.
