Sheriff Locates Unregistered Sex Offender

A citizen informed authorities that a convicted sex offender was working on the N.M. 4 state road crew in White Rock, but had not registered with the local Sheriff’s Office.
“A call came in through the Crime Stoppers Tip Line on March 14 of a possible sex offender working in White Rock and we passed the information along to the Sheriff’s Office,” said Capt. Randy Foster of the Los Alamos Police Department.

Prescribed Burn Begins Today

A 144-acre prescribed burn is planned in the Santa Fe National Forest, Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District beginning today if conditions are favorable.
Fire managers plan to treat 50 to 100 acres per day within a two day period.
The name of the project is the Southwest Barbero prescribed burn.
The treatment is expected to take place 12 miles south of the Rowe/Glorieta Mesa near Forest Road 124, and 12 miles south of Pecos.
Treatment will be by hand ignitions.

Progress Rolls Forward at White Rock Visitor Center

There has been much progress in the White Rock Victor Center site work and most of the underground utilities are almost complete.
Other site work that is on-going includes: placement of drainage drop inlets, corrugated metal piping in Canada for new driveway and on the RV parking areas.
Placement of masonry block for a dumpster enclosure and cistern tank is scheduled to be completed by the end of this week.

LANL Releases Voluntary Separation Program Results
Los Alamos National Laboratory today announced that 557 employees will leave the Laboratory as part of a voluntary separation program announced last month.
The employees come from nearly all Lab functions, excluding certain essential areas.
“I would like to thank each and every employee who volunteered for the program,” LANL Director Charlie McMillan said in a news release. “Some of them devoted their entire careers to serving the nation during a truly historic time for the country and the Lab. They set the example that we will continue to follow.”

Chimayo Fire Update
New Mexico State Forestry Division spokesperson Dan Ware said that while there are no active flames in the Chimayo Fire, an evacuation order remains in place as a precaution for Chimayo and the surrounding communities because flames could flare up overnight.
Should that happen, evacuees are advised to go to the Espanola Stroke and Rehabilitation Center at 735 Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Park Road.
The brush fire began about 6 p.m. today and burned along N.M. 76 near Chimayo. It has consumed 20 acres, Ware said.

Fire Burning Near Chimayo is Threatening 100 Homes

About 50 firefighters are battling a 20-acre brush fire burning near N.M. 76 close to Chimayo.
“I don’t know specifically if the Sancuario is threatened but if it is, we’ll have structure protection in place,” said spokesman Dan Ware of the New Mexico State Forestry Division. “About 45 minutes ago (7:30 p.m.) crews were getting a handle on the fire – it’s not contained by any means – but they are starting to get it under control.”
