With the Los Alamos High School Homecoming Dance just around the corner, the Homecoming Committee is putting on the final touches and working out some last minute kinks. The dance is Saturday, Sept. 22.

There are no sports beyond our body’s capability! When we have pain playing a sport though, it is easy to blame the activity for our pain.

Running, the primary functional movement our body was designed for, has a reputation for being hard on or even bad for the body.

It is often the first sport we are advised not to do if we have any lower extremity pain. If running were the problem then everyone who runs should hurt as a result of participating, right?

OBITUARY: Stella Arrowsmith April 24, 1923 – Aug. 31, 2012

Stella P. Arrowsmith, 89, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2012 at Aspen Ridge Lodge. She was born Stefania Polec on April 24, 1923 to immigrants Josephine (Markowicz) Polec and Michal Polec in Enfield, Conn.

Stella attended Enfield Public Schools and also attended technical school in Hartford, Conn. Early on, Stella worked as a pattern setter at the Bigelow Sanford Carpet Company where she met her future husband Edward J. Arrowsmith.

They were married June 6, 1953 and enjoyed 54 years of marriage before Edward’s death in February 2008. Stella held a variety of jobs and had multiple interests including Read More

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning until 11 p.m. for Los Alamos. Avoid flood areas.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has extended the Flash Flood Warning for:

  • Northwestern Los Alamos County in north central New Mexico
  • Extreme southeastern Rio Arriba County in north central New Mexico
  • Northeastern Sandoval County in north central New Mexico

After relocating to New Mexico from Maryland in 2010, the incoming Los Alamos County Princess, Julia Montoya, continued to pursue her passion for horses and interest in horsemanship with the Turquoise Trail Wranglers 4-H Club. 

The club leaders, Rick Iannucci and Nancy DeSantis, also operate the non-profit Horses for Heroes – New Mexico Inc. Cowboy Up! program for wounded veterans.

Jean Banta Balestrini, 86, longtime resident of Los Alamos died July 9th, 2012, surrounded by family at Sombrillo Nursing home. She was born on April 2, 1926 in Los Angeles California to Francis and Mary Banta.

Jean Graduated from Fresno State College with a degree in education in 1948. She married Silvio J Balestrini June 22, 1948, in Berkley, California. Jean worked as a teacher and librarian while Silvio completed his PhD in physics at UC Berkeley. Jean and Silvio, with their 3-year-old son, John, moved to Los Alamos in June of 1954. Y Earth Service Corps Fundraises for Creativity for Peace

The Los Alamos Y Earth Service Corps has had an exciting past month. They have continued to work on maintaining and improving the trails around Los Alamos, and have begun working on The Satch Cowan Trail, a trail honoring a local woman who has helped make the Los Alamos YES Corps program possible. 

Additionally, the YES Corps has volunteered at the Espanola Humane Society, has deconstructed unsafe fencing for the Wildlife Center, and has served as mentors for the Y’s iCARE program participants for an activity studying a forest floor.
