Bear Springs Fire June 6 Update

Firefighters hope to gain the upper hand on the Bear Springs Fire with burnout operations today.

The fire, which began at 6:36 p.m. June 3 is burning in the Jemez Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest, six miles northeast of Ponderosa and six mile southeast of Jemez Springs.

A lightning strike caused the fire, which has burned 400 acres of mixed conifer and ponderosa pine to date.

Voters placed Kristen Henderson on top of the six-person race to fill three vacancies on the Los Alamos County Council, according to Tuesday’s unofficial election results. Henderson, a Democrat and an attorney who works as a Realtor for REMAX received 1,077 primary election votes.

Bandelier ‘Get Outdoors Day’ is Fee Free!

Saturday, June 9, will be the first celebration of “Get Outdoors Day,” meant to encourage healthy, active outdoors fun.

Also known as GO Day, it will be a fee free day in National Park areas nationwide.

At Bandelier National Monument, Superintendent Jason Lott will be sponsoring a family hike, meeting at 8 a.m. at the Burnt Mesa trailhead.

Along with Lott’s family, participants will hike out along the established trail and come back on an off-trail return route that is being considered to make the trail a loop.

Entrants Sought for Science and Math-based Art Contest

A science and math-based art juried competition and exhibit (SMART) will once again be a part of The Next Big Idea festival in 2012. 

Artist entries are currently being accepted until the end of July at the www.NextBigIdeaLA.com/smart. 

Anyone may enter their art. More than $2,500 in prizes will be awarded. 

The inaugural competition last year netted more than 900 entries from throughout the world and prizes winners shared thousands of dollars in cash prizes.

FIREFIGHTERS PREPARE CONTINGENCY LINES FOR BURNOUT OPERATIONS ON WEDNESDAY

Today, crews prepared indirect containment lines for tomorrow’s activity, which will consist of introducing fire on ridge tops north of the fire, and allowing the fire to back downhill to the indirect containment lines. This tactic, called a burnout, will reduce or remove fuel in advance of the fire front, leaving little or nothing to burn.
