Andrew Zhao Named 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has announced the selection of Los Alamos High School senior Andrew Zhao as a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Zhao is one of 141 outstanding American high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.

Mitchell Trailhead Work Session Set for Monday

TRAIL WORK News:

IMBA’s local chapter, the Los Alamos Singletrack Association (L.A.S.A) is holding a trail work session from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Monday May 7 at the Mitchell Trailhead.

Volunteers will work on some maintainanece items on the Perimeter Trail toward the cemetary, and are asked to wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

It will be a relatively short and easy trail work session and it will be led by Craig Martin, local trail guru and trailmaster.

L.A.S.A’s goal is to help promote the Los Alamos trail community and welcome all types of trail enthusiasts. Read More

Youth Work Party for Lock-In

The Family YMCA is offering a free lock-in night to youth groups who provide up to 15 youth and adult volunteers for 5-hours during a work party on May 12. The offer is limited, so groups must respond by May 9.

Y facility manager David Clark is coordinating the work that will include landscaping, planting, raking and spring clean-up.  The Lock-In is for overnight use of the Y during closed hours, and allows groups access to most of the facility for games one night during the year. The Delle Foundation is a Los Alamos-based foundation started by Helen and George Cowan.

18 Volunteers Sought for Senior Appreciation Night

Volunteers are needed for the community-sponsored graduation celebration event known as Senior Appreciation Night (SAN), including someone to wear a monkey suit.
 
Numerous parents have volunteered, but 18 volunteers are still needed to fill two or three-hour shifts from 6 p.m. until 2:30 a.m., Saturday May 26.
 
A henna tattoo artist also is needed.
 
SAN is an all-night, safe, supervised downtown graduation celebration sponsored by several business and community organization.

The new trend that is sweeping Los Alamos … customer initiated drive throughs! It’s hoped that by having more new drive thru windows, less parking spaces will be needed downtown as shoppers will not have to stop to shop or get information. Let’s hope it works and we can reduce the asphalt in Los Alamos!
