County Council Tentatively Approves Proposed Community Services Budget

Community Services Department Director Brian Brogan presents his proposed budget to Los Alamos County Council during its budget hearing Monday night in Council Chambers. Council tentatively approved the department’s $12,714,679 budget and several budget options including $20,000 for 100 columbarium units at Guaje Pines Cemetery, $65,000 for park maintenance projects, $52,000 for RV hookup at Main Gate Park with the caveat that only conduits will be installed under the asphalt, $13,500 for the Buzz Bus services during the summer concert series, $11,000 for the Buzz Bus services during SummerFest, $15,000 for staffing the White Rock Senior Center, $10,000 for signage materials for the trail project, $20,000 to pay for casual and temporary staffing at the golf course, $14,820 for additional staff hours at the Nature Center and $7,500 for marketing expenses for the County’s DWI program. Council also approved Councilor Chris Chandler’s request for $18,000 for landscaping the island at 36th Street and Arizona Avenue and Vice Chair Susan O’Leary’s request to include $80,000 as a placeholder for a public health nurse. A few budget options did not make the cut. Council agreed with Councilor Pete Sheehey’s recommendation to not approve $20,000 for new collections in the library system and $17,664 was not approved to promote a position at the Cooperative Extension Office.
