Currently, the local BMX track features a closed sign citing safety concerns but not for long. Its circumstances are quickly changing as the result of Los Alamos County approving $100,000 for the project during its Nov. 12 meeting.
 
With this approval, the hopes are high that next summer, the BMX track will be back in business and hosting U.S. BMX-sanctioned events.

County Issues Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter weather is here and Los Alamos County would like to remind residents of some important safety considerations for motorists to take in order to make their travel as safe as possible.

As part of Winterfest activities, residents are invited to join the Los Alamos County Council for the annual lighting of the holiday tree Saturday, Dec. 7 in the main lobby of the Municipal Building in downtown Los Alamos.

Doors open at 5 p.m., the tree lighting is 5:30 p.m. and there will be free hot cocoa and cookies, plus, an opportunity to take a selfie photo with a Winterfest themed backdrop and props.

County Releases Winter Sidewalk Clearing Guidelines

During the winter months, Los Alamos County would like to remind residents that it is important to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice so that they remain pass­able for postal workers, children walking to school and others who need to use them.

When possible, and depend­ing upon available resources, County crews will conduct sidewalk-clearing operations by removing snow first from the adopted “safe routes to school” and then move to other selected sidewalks.

Cone Zone: Final Update Of 2019 Construction Season

COUNTY News:

This is the final update from the Los Alamos County Public Works/Traffic Division on road projects for the 2019 construction season.

N.M. 502 Road Construction/Roundabout:

No changes to detours – same as last week. Star Paving will not be working on Thanksgiving or the day after Thanksgiving.

Eastbound traffic will continue to use 4th Street to Central Avenue and back to N.M. 502.

Westbound traffic will continue to use Central Avenue to Knecht Street and back onto N.M. 502.

County: Library Policies Go To Council Tuesday

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Council will be voting to adopt revisions to library policies at the Nov. 26 Council Meeting.

The library policies have not been revised since 2010.

Over several months, the Library Board conducted a systematic review of the library policies in parallel with an internal review by library management and approved revisions to the policies at the Nov. 4 Library Board Meeting.

Key policy changes include revision of policies related to photographing or videotaping in the library, donations, public access computing including Internet use and meeting space.

Los Alamos County Council will consider the adoption of multi-year increases to the Department of Public Utilities’ (DPU) water and sewer rates at two public hearings. 

Beginning 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, the public hearings will be conducted during the council meeting in Council Chambers at 1000 Central Ave.
