Members of the Los Alamos County Council may attend a data presentation at the New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency (NM-YRRS) Roadshow, 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave.
A quorum of the council may be present, however no council action will be taken.
The NM-YRRS is a tool to assess the health risk behaviors and resiliency (protective) factors of New Mexico high school and middle school students. The NM-YRRS is part of the national CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), but the survey results have widespread

Los Alamos County Council Work Session On Capital Improvement Projects Draws Crowd

The Dekker Perich Sabatini (DPS) team participated in a Los Alamos County Council work session Tuesday on the 11 capital projects being considered for a possible bond election next May.
The team spoke before a packed house with approximately 50 members of the public and County staff. Will Gleason, Principal with DPS, gave an overview of the 11 projects and initial probable cost estimates for each project.

Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero is advising the community of a newly registered sex offender.
Todd Frederick App registered with the local sheriff’s office today. He was convicted July, 14, 1993 in the Superior Court of Pinal County, State of Arizona of 1 count of “Aggravated Sexual Assault, 1st Degree (Child Under 15).” He also was convicted of 1 count of “Attempted Kidnapping, 2nd Degree”.

Tips To Manage Waste To Minimize Bear Encounters

Bears have been making their way into residential areas in Los Alamos because of lack of food in the wild and ease of getting it out of trash roll carts.
Here are some safe practices for managing waste to minimize encounters with bears:
- Avoid luring bears on to your property by maintaining any fallen fruit; bring it here to the ECO Station and help donate to Dr. Kathleen Ramsay’s bear cubs at her rehab center.
- Stock up for the winter and preserve fruit by canning or drying fruit.
Range Road Improvement Work Begins Sept. 26
COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County Public Works Department crews are scheduled to start work Sept. 26 on a bus turn-a-round on Range Road just north of the intersection at Aspen Drive.
The work will primarily be limited to the east shoulder of Range Road, however, motorists and pedestrians should watch for increased heavy equipment in the area. The work is anticipated to last approximately one month, weather permitting.

LAC News:Golf Course Closed For Maintenance Wednesday

Los Alamos County Golf Course and driving range will be closed this Wednesday, Sept. 21 for irrigation maintenance and aerification.
The Pro Shop will be open 7 a.m. to noon. Tee times will still be available via telephone during these hours. Cottonwood on the Greens Restaurant will be open normal hours.
The Golf will resume normal operating hours Thursday Sept. 22.

Public Astronomy Dark Night Saturday, Sept. 24
PAJARITO ASTRONOMERS News:
The Pajarito Astronomers is holding a County-sponsored Dark Night starting at 7 p.m. (sunset) Saturday, Sept. 24 at Spirio Soccer Field, Overlook Park in White Rock.
Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze.
Five planets will potentially be visible during the evening:
- Venus;
- Mars;
- Saturn;
- Uranus; and
- Neptune.
There will be a tour of the summer and fall constellations, and there will be telescope views of double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.
