Friday morning’s installation of the pedestrian bridge for the Canyon Rim Trail was quite an operation, involving three cranes and somewhere around 50 workers.

The photo above shows the three cranes used in what was about a two to three hour process, not counting the time needed to get the cranes in place.

Once the pieces of the bridge were bolted together, the very heavy structure (that looks strong enough to Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos County Proposals

By ALLEN COGBILL
Los Alamos

So, two recent proposals from the autocratic bureaucrats of Los Alamos County scream at me.

First, the County has established a “snitch” site, whereby neighbors can snitch on one another. Shades of the USSR! We used to make fun of the commissars of the USSR for encouraging such anti-social behavior, but evidently the Commissars of Los Alamos County have no problem with such horrible behavior. I think this website is shameful, makes the County a laughingstock, and should be taken down immediately.

Second, the Los Alamos County Commissars

Milder: Risk Of Maintaining Sheriff’s Department

By KEN MILDER
Former County Councilor

What does the lawsuit stemming from former Governor Gary Johnson’s support of Indian gaming have to do with the current risk associated with retention of the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Office? As it turns out, quite a lot.

During Gary Johnson’s first campaign for governor he promised New Mexico’s tribal nations that he would support their efforts to establish casinos. Once elected, and without authorization from the NM legislature, Governor Johnson executed gaming compacts with the reservations. He did this against advice from state legislators and the attorney Read More

O’Leary: A Single Excellent Police Department Is The Right Approach For Los Alamos

By SUSAN O’LEARY, Vice Chair
Los Alamos County Council

When Los Alamos County was incorporated as a special and unique type of small, one-community County, a conscious decision was made to have a single well-trained, well-funded professional law enforcement agency, the Los Alamos Police Department. At that time there was discussion about just having no Sheriff at all. Some say it was a close call, but the position of Sheriff was maintained as a largely ceremonial post with a nominal salary and a few administrative duties; probably as some kind of compromise decision.

Chandler: It’s Important To Preserve Home Rule

By CHRIS CHANDLER
Los Alamos County Council Candidate
Former Charter Review Committee Member

I had previously written about Los Alamos County’s unique status as an H class, incorporated county.  (LA Daily Post, June 21, 2016). I now address our County’s status as a home rule, incorporated county.

As an incorporated county, we benefitfrom the flexibility afforded home rule municipalities. Under common law, cities are limited in their authorities, and are allowed to exercise only those authorities grantedto them by the state legislature. Under this governing model, Read More

Girrens On Local Economic Development Opportunities

By STEVEN GIRRENS
County Councilor

I open sadly by expressing my sincerest condolences to the Vance Hatler family. Our community has lost an honorable native son, who was a loving husband to Karri and a father to four beautiful children. I am especially saddened as Vance was proving himself a capable budding leader in his work environment at the Laboratory. I will relish the memory of experiencing Little League Baseball with Vance, Loren and dad-coach Larry over 35 years ago in White Rock. Rest in peace Vance.

I take this opportunity to present my perspectives on a couple items of significant importance Read More

Reiss: Does History Support The Need For A Sheriff?

By RICK REISS, Chair
Los Alamos County Council

The history of the role of sheriff reaches back to the Anglo-Saxon period of English history, where local governments were known as shires and the principal officer of the shire was known as a reeve. The two words were combined to become “sheriff”.

Those who support an elected sheriff often refer to the history of the position as the reason to retain a sheriff. The lengthy history demonstrates significant changes in the role of the sheriff over a period of several hundred years. Notably, the appointment of the sheriff, the
