County Announces Police Chief Candidate Names, Sets Public Meet/Greet Reception

LAPD News:

Members of the public are invited to a reception Thursday, Sept. 12 to meet the top five candidates for Los Alamos County Police Chief.

The reception is 6-7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers inside the new Municipal Building, 1,000 Central Ave. Refreshments will be served. Candidates will be available 6-6:30 p.m. to visit informally with attendees. At approximately 6:30 p.m., each of the candidates will be asked to make brief remarks about their background, experience and why they believe they are the best candidate for the job.

UNM-LA Mil Levy Ballots Continue at Steady Pace

Los Alamos County Chief Deputy Clerk Sheryl Nichols said late this morning that her office has been receiving a steady flow of ballots for the UNM-LA mil levy election following the holiday weekend. Ballots must physically arrive in the Clerk’s Office by 7 p.m., Sept. 17 to be counted. Dr. Cindy Rooney, Dean of Instruction at UNM-LA will speak at this month’s Chamber Business Breakfast about the funding situation at the college and how the local campus can better serve businesses. Los Alamos County Leader in Health Insurance Coverage

COUNTY News:

The percentage of residents younger than 65 in Los Alamos County who had health insurance in 2011 was 95.3 percent, putting it in second place among the nation’s 3,143 counties, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Only Norfolk County in Massachusetts had a higher insured rate at 96.9 percent.

New Mexico had the fourth-highest uninsured rate among the states in 2011 at 23 percent. It followed Texas, Florida and Nevada.

Los Alamos County had by far the lowest uninsured rate in New Mexico at 4.7 percent. The next lowest was Eddy County at 17.9 percent. Read More

Pet of the Week: Darcie the Long-haired Tortoiseshell

SHELTER News:

Darcie, the long-haired tortoiseshell has really come out of her shell. She was surrendered with a few other feline friends when their owner moved to assisted living.

For a while Darcie hid under the kennels, but has finally decided that the carpeted cat tower isn’t so bad, as long as she gets the spot on top where she can keep an eye on everyone else.

Darcie retires a bit when approached, but quickly warms up when petted softly. Sometimes she’ll even roll over and show off her back feet – one is black and one is white. Darcie is declawed and must be an indoor cat.
