DIXON PLAYERS News:
The Dixon Community Players are at it again. After being quiet through COVID, they have now created an exciting new musical revue: The Razzmatazz of Radio And Jazz.
It begins at the time that the unimaginable horrors of WWI have finally come to an end. Americans are ready to unwind and celebrate. The period of the “Roaring Twenties” has begun. And the coming powerful emergence of radio and electricity in the home during the 20’s and 30’s was about to change people’s lives forever. For the first time, music, sports, politics and news were able to be brought into every person’s home by radio. And Jazz became the flourishing music of the era.
But with it all came also the infamous time of the Prohibition. And with that came hundreds of secretive establishments called speakeasies, where serving liquor thrived in defiance of the law. And where entry was gained only by using a special password.
And so it is in the Bluebird Club, an upscale speakeasy with both a dance floor and orchestra, that this show takes place. Entertainment will be by song and by excerpts from some of the era’s most popular sitcoms: Fibber McGee and Molly, Jack Benny, and Burns and Allen. And as a special event, for the first time there will be a radio broadcast from the Bluebird Club, which will allow radio listeners to enjoy the club’s performances from the comfort of their own home.
In Act II we see that the Bluebird Club has been bought out by the KLDK radio station, and the Bluebird clientele will be the first live audience for a new radio show.
Once again, the Dixon Players have gathered actors and singers from the Embudo Valley area, Taos and Los Alamos to create this fun production. The orchestra will be headed by Rick De Stefano from Taos. Cindy Valerio, also from Taos, and Holly Haas from Dixon are co-directing. Karen Thiebodeau, another Taos singer, will add song and humor. Dixonite Jeff Spicer will be the MC. Other familiar Dixon players including Marilyn Johns, Deb Kirstens, and Marlene Gray will also be featured. And from Los Alamos, Lisa Jo and Rob Dunham, round out the cast and orchestra.
The Razzmatazz of Radio And Jazz will be performed at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 as well as 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Toolshed, 68 N.M. 75 in Dixon. Tickets are $15. Reserve a ticket by contacting Suzzana at suzannaduran9100@gmail.com and pick them up at the performance.
