Santa Fe Community College Offers Coding & Creativity Opportunities With Support From Apple

SANTA FE — This fall, Santa Fe Community College will offer the Santa Fe region new learning opportunities around coding and creativity, with the support of Apple’s Community Education Initiative.
Community partners include Santa Fe Public Schools, Santa Fe Indian School, Boys & Girls Club of Santa Fe/Del Norte, and STEM Santa Fe, which will work with the college and Santa Fe Community College Foundation to cultivate digital literacy, digital equity, and coding and creativity experience to Santa Fe’s diverse community.

Los Alamos High School 1998 graduate Josh Simpson, who has nearly two decades of experience in college and professional baseball, enters his first season as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia on the staff of Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson.
During the 2023 season, Simpson served as the director of baseball operations for the LSU baseball program and coach Jay Johnson. The Tigers captured the national title, finishing with a 54-17 mark. Dressed in historic costumes, staff will guide visitors on a lantern lit tour to “meet” some of the personalities who helped weave the fabric of Fort Union.

Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Divisions have partnered up with the Pajarito Astronomers for the Dark Night program.
Anyone with an interest in star gazing and the chance to look through a telescope is invited to come out to Spirio Soccer Fields tonight, July 15, at Overlook Park in White Rock.
Volunteers from the Pajarito Astronomers Club will be present with telescopes starting about 8:30 p.m. until at least 11 p.m., and as late as midnight if there is continued interest.

Los Alamos Public Schools, in partnership with Dekker Perich Sabatini Architects and Jaynes Corporation, has announced the start this week of construction of the new Piñon Elementary School in White Rock.
The public is invited to a ground breaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 19 at Piñon Elementary School.
Construction of the new school building is scheduled to be completed by December 2024. Demolition of the current buildings will start in January 2025.

It’s not every day that an old friend becomes a museum exhibit.
The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces recently opened an exhibit, “Beyond the Farm: Groundbreaking Agriculture,” to honor seven people. One was the late Jessie Fitzgerald, the nation’s first female county extension agent.
When I met Jessie, I was a rookie reporter in Grants, and we were part of a circle of women friends, all with challenging jobs. Not until much later did I learn Jessie came from a historic family and had herself made history.
