African Library Project Upcoming Fundraiser At SALA Today

LAPS Students Qualify For New Mexico State Spelling Bee

Two Los Alamos Public Schools students are among 25 champions who have qualified to compete in the New Mexico State Spelling Bee.
Julia Zou, a 7th grader at Los Alamos Middle School and Rebekah Scott, a 6th grader at Aspen Elementary School, will compete in the State Spelling Bee Saturday, April 1 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the Pete Domenici Education Building.

- MINIMAL 23-24 Calendar changes approved by April 18, 2023 that won’t bear additional costs.
- HB130 requires 1140 Hours of student instructional time.
- Add 78 hours (1140 – 1062 current) for Elementary
- Use 2 hours on Wednesday afternoons (currently Professional Development, no students) and rest continues as Professional Development.

With just a little over a day to go in the 2023 legislative session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill into law expanding learning time for students in the state’s public schools.
House Bill 130 will mandate an increase in learning time in public schools to 1,140 hours, plus additional professional development time for teachers, while allowing districts some flexibility in when to add the hours.
