New LAMS Principal Jill Gonzales

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) announced that Jill Gonzales has accepted the position of principal at Los Alamos Middle School.

She is replacing Principal Suzanne Lynne who has announced her retirement. Lynne spent 30 years as an educator. Twenty-five of those years were in New Mexico. During her tenure as a classroom teacher, she taught at Mountain, Chamisa and Aspen schools. For 14 of her 25 years, she worked as a Reading Coach in all five elementary schools. For the last six years, she has served as a principal.

More than 300 members of the Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Class of 2022 will receive their high school diplomas Saturday, May 28. 

Staff have already begun preparing for the graduation ceremony, which will be held outdoors at Sullivan Field.

The Los Alamos community is throwing a free all-night graduation party for the Class of 2022, 6 p.m. Saturday to 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Here’s how it works:

  • A key tag with punch card and schedule of events will be given to seniors at graduation. Please don’t lose it because just one was made for each senior.

UNM-LA Advisory Board Reschedules Meeting To June 1

The UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board postponed its May 9 meeting due to the impact of the wildfires in the area. The rescheduled meeting is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 in the Lecture Hall, Building 2, on the UNM-LA campus.

Agenda items will include an update on the UNM-LA Chancellor transition and a presentation by the UNM-LA Institutional Researcher on Student Success metrics. The UNM-LA Executive Team also will present administrative reports.

PAC 8 summer media classes start Tuesday, May 31 and openings remain for students aged 9-14.

Students have opportunities to learn videography, editing using Premiere Pro, drone flying with photography and videography, music composition, lighting, special effects, GoPro Video and more.

School is almost out for the summer but the Los Alamos Public Schools Transportation Department urges all drivers in the county to stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.

“We want to keep the students of Los Alamos safe,” said LAPS Director of Transportation Keith Rosenbaum. “Running the stop arm and flashing red lights of a school bus endangers the students getting on and off the buses. New Mexico To Deliver $2.3 Million In Food Assistance For More Than 39,000 Students For COVID-Related Absences

SANTA FE — Families for around 39,520 New Mexico school-aged students grade level K-12 will receive benefits May 22, to reimburse them for free and reduced-price school meals missed due to COVID-related absences.

Approximately $2,384,826 in Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) will be issued to cover meals K-12 students missed in December 2021 and January 2022, after schools returned to in-person learning. The issuance amount is $7.10 per day the child was absent from school due to COVID.
