This year is no exception with the winner being a shrink-wrapped Tundra spotted Saturday in the Griffith Gymnasium parking lot in front of the Wellness Center. As National Women’s History Month continues, we celebrate former Los Alamos Family Council Program Director Cheryl Pongratz. Nineteen years ago, Pongratz joined Los Alamos Family Council after retiring from Los Alamos Public Schools.

SANTA FE — A Tularosa High School senior was surprised on national television today with news that she’s one of 31 students across the nation to receive a $40,000 college scholarship.
Lexi Gallegos learned she will receive the BigFuture scholarship from the College Board during a virtual appearance with 24 other recipients on ABC’s Good Morning America television show.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) have secured more than $18 million in Congressionally Directed Spending for New Mexico colleges and universities in the historic bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Agreement for Fiscal Year 2022.

Los Alamos High School Senior Andy Corliss was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2022 USA Biolympiad. He scored in the top 20 percent in the nation on the USABO exam, and was just one point away from the cutoff for being a semifinalist.

Piñon Elementary School 6th grader Julia Zou was among the top 16 mathematicians in New Mexico in the recent Mathcounts competition.
This was Zou’s first year participating in the competition. Even though she didn’t qualify for the countdown round at the state level, she is looking forward to participating in the program again next year, her coach Svetlana Martin said.
“Julia had a lot of fun, and it really increased her interest in mathematics,” Martin said.
Martin has been coaching Mathcounts since 2007 at Pinon Elementary and Barranca Mesa Elementary schools.

Teachers from Los Alamos Public Schools who have completed LETRS certification were honored by LAPS and the LAPS Foundation Tuesday evening at Pig + Fig Cafe in White Rock. LETRS stands for Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling. It is a training for teachers that provides them with in-depth knowledge and tools, which they can then use with any reading program. It includes eight units of study. SANTA FE – Today, Attorney General Hector Balderas announced that Gary Gregor, a former elementary teacher at Agua Fria Elementary School in Santa Fe, was sentenced to 84 additional years in prison.
Last week, a jury found Gregor guilty of four counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, and one count of criminal sexual contact of a minor.

Safety Town For Incoming Kindergarteners Starts June 6
LAPS News:
Save the date for Safety Town. This year the free program for all children entering kindergarten in the fall is 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10 at Barranca Mesa Elementary School.
Students will participate in hands-on activities, crafts, interactions with safety personnel, and safety situations to prepare for potential hazards they may encounter at school, at home or in the community.
Safety Town gives children the opportunity to:
- Engage in safety activities to build their self-confidence at school, in the community, and at home;
