As I read about the celebrations and efforts being made to honor the Los Alamos High School Class of 2020 because of the pandemic, I can’t help but think about the LAHS Class of 2000 and what happened to their senior year celebrations and graduation because of the Cerro Grande Fire.
Lawry Mann was on the County Council at the time of the fire when I was LAHS principal. He and I had a conversation about what we could do about senior prom. Lawry managed to persuade and cajole Fuller Lodge to allow us to hold prom there – the first time ever an event of that

The Smithsonian Science Education Center, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP)—a partnership of 140 national academies of science, engineering and medicine—has developed “COVID-19! How can I protect myself and others?,” a new rapid-response guide for youth ages 8–17.
The guide, which is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, aims to help young people understand the science and social science of COVID-19 as well as help them take actions to keep themselves, their families and communities safe.

SANTA FE — District superintendents and charter school leaders were notified by Public Education Department Secretary Ryan Stewart, late Tuesday night that the department, “made the difficult decision to cancel any K-5 Plus and Extended Learning Time Programs that were set to take place this summer”.
This notice halts two impactful programs that have turned out massive support from legislators and communities alike. Both programs were on track to have record-breaking participation this summer.

Santa Fe Community College and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center will be closed Monday, May 25, in honor of Memorial Day.
There will be no drive-up food distribution by World Central Kitchen Monday, May 25 on the SFCC Campus.
Drive-up food distribution will resume Wednesday, May 27 and available 2-4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through June 19.

The Summit Garden Club is honored to award the 2020 Pat Edmonds and Sue Graves Memorial Scholarship to Los Alamos High School senior Kaya Krantz. She was named to the Girls Varsity Soccer All State Team, participated in National Honor Society and served as head editor for the LAHS yearbook. Krantz will attend Fort Lewis College this fall majoring in Biology. She hopes to pursue a career in a medical and/or environmental field. Los Alamos High School senior Kaley (Kay) Muller is a well-rounded student who loves her family, creating art, fly fishing, cheerleading and shooting her shotgun.

New Mexico Graduate Medical Education Programs To Receive $1 Million Adding 36 Physicians To State’s Workforce

SANTA FE — Three graduate medical education programs will receive a total of $1 million for program development and expansion, adding 36 primary care physicians to the state’s workforce, the New Mexico Human Services Department announced Friday.
The funding recipients are:
- Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (Las Cruces) for expansion of the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine program to add four residents per year for a total of 12 new residency positions;
- Memorial Medical Center (Las Cruces) to create a new general psychiatry program that will add three residents per year
