Los Alamos school parking lots are empty and playgrounds strangely quiet but being at home hasn’t stopped students from continuing to work hard to learn, including creating interesting projects.
Many new winners have been selected in the Superintendent’s Project Challenge. The third round included 47 new entries.

Los Alamos High School senior Joslyn Martinez has had a very good couple of weeks. Her hard work and dedication has earned her several scholarships and more are coming in.
So far Martinez received scholarships from the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation, Zia Credit Union Education Foundation, Knights of Columbus, New Mexico Credit Union Education Foundation and El Centro Family Health Board.

Canyon Tree Frogs Lifting Spirits In Los Alamos: Meet Gilly

Gilly is a canyon tree frog who loves lifting spirits around Los Alamos. Gilly is a member of the family of critters living at the Los Alamos Nature Center on Canyon Road. Canyon tree frogs can be hard to spot because their coloring blends in with their habitat. Look for them on rocks in Acid Canyon, around ponds, or in White Rock Canyon. School Board Unanimously Passes 2020-2021 Budget

Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus presented the Los Alamos Public Schools Budget for the 2020-2021 School Year to the School Board Tuesday evening for approval at the Regular School Board Meeting held virtually.
The budget was passed unanimously by the full board on a roll-call vote.

As we have passed Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation week, we look ahead to graduation.
Several years ago, I worked for the schools and led a great program called, WEB Crew. This year’s graduating class were the first students to be welcomed into the middle school as seventh graders, leaders of the program in eighth grade, and welcomed into high school, as freshmen, by Link Crew.

Canine Rattlesnake Avoidance Training In White Rock May 30
SUBLIME CANINE News:
Worried about your dog and rattlesnakes?
JJ Belcher of Sublime Canine, Tucson, Ariz., is scheduled to conduct Snake Avoidance training May 30 in White Rock.
This Rattlesnake Avoidance training is done with live Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes that have had their venom glands surgically removed by a licensed exotic animal vet.
“The training is safe, effective and humane for the snake and the dogs that they work with,” Sublime Canine said.
Dogs are trained to recognize and avoid the sight, smell and sound of a rattlesnake.

LAPS: May Is Mental Health Month

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans live with a mental illness.
In an effort to raise awareness about mental illness and educate the public on ways to help, NAMI has launched a “You are Not Alone” campaign during the month of May as part of Mental Health month.
Los Alamos Public Schools is supporting this campaign by providing resources and awareness.
