New Mexico Educators’ Pension Fund Investments Posts Annual Gains In Difficult Year

SANTA FE The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (ERB) fund, which provides defined pension benefits to the state’s public educational employees, posted net investment gains of just over $95 million for the 2018 calendar year.
 
This represents a return of 0.6% for the year, net of investment manager fees. The returns come during a time of extreme market volatility and underperformance. Thus, a 0.6% return is higher than most other investors when almost all stock markets posted losses.

Los Alamos Middle School Jazz bands hit the high notes, low notes and all the notes in between as they performed very well at the recent Albuquerque/UNM Jazz Fest. Jazz 1 and Jazz 3 received a Superior, rating of 1, while Jazz 2 received an Excellent, rating of 2.

Come hear Los Alamos High School’s Schola Cantorum in concert with University of Denver’s Lamont Chorale at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Duane Smith Auditorium.
 
Schola Cantorum is LAHS’s premiere mixed ensemble, having won state competitions twice, first in 2015 and again in 2017.

Charter School Moratorium Advances In House

New Mexico moved a step closer Wednesday to halting the growth of charter schools.
 
The House Education Committee voted 10-3 for a bill that would place a moratorium on new charter schools from June 14 of this year until Jan. 1, 2022.
 
Freshman Rep. Jack Chatfield, R-Mosquero, joined the Democrats on the committee in voting for the moratorium. The proposal, House Bill 434, would not cap enrollment at New Mexico’s 96 charter schools, nor would it seek to close any of them. They have a collective enrollment of more than 26,000.

SANTA FE – The State Land Office held its monthly online oil and gas lease sales, which garnered the largest open bid sale in history and generated more than $35 million for New Mexico schools, hospitals and colleges.

The open bid included 8,920.27 acres in Chaves, Lea and Eddy Counties and closed at over $12 million, more than double the previous record for an open bid.

The aggregate bid amounted to an average per-acre price of $3,961.25.

This  month, the Boy Scouts of America began accepting girls from fifth grade through high school into a newly named program called Scouts BSA, which allows girls the opportunities boys have, including becoming Eagle Scouts, the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

The move comes a year after girls from first to fifth grade were allowed to join Cub Scouts.
