SFCC Fitness Center Closing For Renovations

SANTA FE ― Santa Fe Community College’s William C. Witter Fitness Education Center’s recreation facilities will undergo major renovations beginning in December.

The gymnasium is scheduled to be closed today through Feb. 5, for floor repairs and refinishing. The entire facility is scheduled to be closed Saturday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019.

SFCC holds it fall graduation Dec. 8 at the Fitness Education Center and will be closed to fitness patrons.

We are thankful for the recent support from LAPS Foundation and our local Rotary Club who have awarded us separate grants for our Robotic Blimps and Hoverboard Repair projects.

LAPS Foundation awarded us $825 for two robotic blimps, and the Rotary Club awarded us $500 for replacement parts and for a LAMS hoverboard.

My pre-engineering/robotics student Nick Sawyer attended the initial Rotary Club luncheon two weeks ago to present the hoverboard repair project for their consideration. Nick then went back with me yesterday

ALBUQUERQUE ― The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division (SAMHSA), a unit of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will reimburse transportation costs for student field trips to the upcoming exhibition, Drugs: Costs & Consequences: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause, at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS).

Santa Fe Community College hosts a Nurses Pinning Ceremony at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 in the Jemez Rooms on campus at 6401 Richards Ave.

The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition that dates back to the 1860s when Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition for her service during the Crimean War. To share the honor, she in turn presented the medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice of pinning new nursing graduates was standard throughout the U.S.

YMCA Raises $4,800 To Help Local Teen Centers

Together, in a single day, we raised $4,800 toward helping 2,500 youth served at our teen centers in Española and Los Alamos, and 300 people at our YMCA.

This is a great success!

We are grateful for the loving, caring spirit that moved our donors now and all year. At 7 p.m., Tuesday night, our #GivingTuesday total sat at $2,300, given by 36 friends, and then I got an email pledge from one more individual that took us to $4,800. WOW.

Holiday Game Jam For Kids At Los Alamos Makers

Almost a year ago, Los Alamos Makers hosted the first Global Kids Game Jam teams in Los Alamos.

During that Global Game Jam, kids from all over the world came together with their local clubs to create, experiment, socialize and create video games, not just play them. One of the Los Alamos teams was selected for the world finale and invited to Turin, Italy.

This year, Los Alamos Makers is hosting a local game jam for kids 7 to 12, with a holiday spirit.
