The Los Alamos Community Foundation annual conference for nonprofits Sharing our Vision: Getting the Community Involved is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 20 in Room 230, Building 2 at UNM-Los Alamos. The cost is free.

LAPS: New And Returning Student Registration

Los Alamos Public Schools will begin registration Tuesday, May 1, for returning students for the 2018-2019 school year. Registration for new students is open now.

LAPS will send out an email to one parent per family Monday, April 23, with instructions for registering their student(s) online. Parents may then login to the student registration site to complete the online form for each child attending an LAPS school.

How to know if your child is a new or returning student:

ALBUQUERQUE  Wednesday is the deadline for Albuquerque and Dulce public school districts to submit their second-round school turnaround proposals to the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) with detailed plans for improving student learning at a total of four schools, serving 1,300 of the youngest learners, that have earned Fs from the state since at least 2013.

Saturday, April 7, 26 Los Alamos students participated in the State Science Fair at New Mexico Tech in Socorro. Los Alamos Public School students received 16 awards in the Junior Division, and in the Senior Division, Los Alamos High School received 32 awards.
 
Of the 11 LAHS students who competed in the Senior Division, seven will be moving on to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh, PA, where they will compete with 1,800 ISEF finalists from around the world May 13-18.

Los Alamos High School 2016 graduate and Texas Tech University sophomore Madeline Lockhart is one of 211 students in the United States selected for a Goldwater Scholarship.

The Goldwater Scholarship was established to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate. Former Los Alamos High School student Ashlyn Bradshaw was accepted into Stanford’s 2018 Summer Program and she is working to raise funds to be able to attend.

Los Alamos High School Junior Peter Watson has been awarded an all‐expense‐paid summer study trip to Germany.

Watson was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 98th percentile on the Level 4 2018 National German Exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). After qualifying with a high score on the exam, he was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German.
