Governor Susana Martinez Proclaims Jan. 21-27 ‘New Mexico School Choice Week’

SANTA FE ― An official proclamation from Gov. Martinez, has named next week School Choice Week in New Mexico. Dozens of other governors and hundreds of city and county leaders nationwide have issued similar proclamations.

New Mexicans have planned 253 events and activities to celebrate school choice and raise awareness of the variety of educational options available in the state. They’re part of the more than 32,000 rallies, roundtable discussions, coffeehouse meet-ups, festivals, school fairs, etc. that have been planned

The Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium has a special show about our local galaxies at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 and a full-dome film Dark Matter Mystery scree ning at 2 p.m. Jan. 20. These shows are organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Education Center (PEEC).

What do we know about our neighbor galaxies? Paul Arendt will share answers to these and more questions about our Universe within four million light-years at 7 p.m. Jan. 19.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training-openings available to the community!

The Los Alamos JJAB has space available in the Youth Mental Health First Aid training taking place Saturday, Jan. 27.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence based, nationally recognized and accredited course that teaches adults who work with youth how to identify symptoms of different types of mental illness. As with any first aid class, there is an action plan to help a youth in crisis. Trainees learn how to assess the person for risk of harm or suicide, listen non-judgmentally,

RIO RANCHO — Gov. Susana Martinez announced Wedenesday that thousands more New Mexico students than ever before are taking and passing Advanced Placement courses.

AP classes are rigorous, university-level courses that give students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

SANTA FE ― New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) orchestra and choir are being featured as the 2018 Honor Choir and Honor Orchestra at the New Mexico Music Educators Association annual conference.

The students will perform at 3 p.m. Jan. 11, at Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico. The NMSA choir and orchestra will be performing for 1,500 music students and educators from around the state of New Mexico.

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and the Reel Deal Theater are teaming up again to bring the popular Backcountry Film Festival to Los Alamos for the seventh year in a row.

Produced by the Boise-based nonprofit Winter Wildlands Alliance, the touring Backcountry Film Festival will make its way to more than 100 locations around the world. The screening at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Reel Deal will be the only one in New Mexico and tickets are available starting Jan. 10.

Family Night is 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the Los Alamos Nature Center and features an evening of games and hands-on activities with Mesa Public Library’s Melissa Mackey. The nature center will be open until 8 p.m. for exploring the exhibits.
