Los Alamos Board Of Education Votes No Change To School Start Time In 2018-19
By Superintendent Dr. Kurt Steinhaus The Los Alamos School Board reviewed options at its Tuesday evening meeting for changing school start times under their Strategic Plan focus areas:
- Student well-being;
- Student learning; and
- Teacher and staff well-being and excellence.
After much discussion, the board approved a motion for no change next year to start and end times. The Board decision also encourages “the high school to explore the implementation of alternative schedules that allow for flexible start times.”

Serena Birnbaum from Los Alamos New Mexico has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest and most prestigious achievement in Girl Scouting.
The Gold Award, which challenges Girl Scouts to make a difference in their communities, is presented to fewer than 6 percent of Girl Scouts each year. This Award is recognized by colleges and employers.

Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes graduates in a special ceremony this week from The Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) Naval Postgraduate School Master’s Degree Program (MA). The CHDS Master’s Degree Program is an 18-month program, geared towards:
- Developing policies, strategies, plans and programs to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, and reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism and catastrophic events;
- Building the organizational and interagency arrangements needed to strengthen homeland security;

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, joined a group of bipartisan senators in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), urging them to include a reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) Program in any end-of-year legislation.

Mountain Choir Sings Carols Downtown Dec. 14
MOUNTAIN CHOIR News:The Mountain School Choir, which recently sang with the Los Alamos High School choir at the Municipal Building for the Holiday Tree Lighting, is performing Christmas Carols beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in front of the downtown post office on Central Ave.
The choir will walk down the street singing in front of businesses, cross the road and sing in CB FOX, walk on that side of the street and will finish will a few songs in Starbucks.

A sendoff celebration for the African Library Project was held Tuesday, Nov. 28 in the Sullivan field parking lot.
A U-Haul truck decorated with balloons and a sign for the African Library Project was loaded by kids of all ages from all the schools in Los Alamos with boxes of books headed to Kenya, Africa, to make 12 school libraries.
