Vincent Chiravelle, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, welcomes Rotary Youth Exchange student Julian Baier of Austria during Baier’s presentation Sept. 26 about his hometown, Neustift , a village of 70 people in lower Austria. Baier, 17, will be hosted by the Rotary Club in Los Alamos through the school year. He has two older sisters who also were Rotary Youth Exchange students; his cat, Jeanie, has an Instagram account with more than 6,500 followers. Local geologist Patrick Rowe will lead an outing to the Cabezon Peak area in search of geological treasures at two sites Saturday, Oct. 14.
Participants can expect to find minerals and marine fossils at the windmill site, and Shark’s Tooth Ridge is aptly named for the fossilized teeth from five species of Cretaceous Period sharks that the group will find. UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) offers programs that train students to meet specific needs in our community, including the fields of emergency medicine and health care.
In 2013, UNM-LA developed an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program. In 2016, the college began offering the Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program, and then in the Spring of 2017 the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program was added. Transfer programs in Pre-Professional Health are also available.

LAHS News:
The Los Alamos High School senior class wants you to get in the Homecoming Spirit. They are selling eyeblacks for $2 a pair and cow bells for $5 each during lunch and after school today and Friday. They also will sell during the Homecoming game Friday night.
“It’s a great way
to show your school spirit and support the Class of 2018,” Class President Sophia Sivils said. The eyeblacks come as a pair and say Homecoming 2017. The cowbells are green with “Go Hilltoppers” printed on them.
