SANTA FE ― The Santa Fe Higher Education Center (SFHEC) will host an Open House 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2 at the campus, 1950 Siringo Road. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The community is invited to participate in the annual Annual Dorothy Hoard Butterfly Count July 22 to honor the memory of Dorothy Hoard by fluttering to three places around the Pajarito Plateau: atop a mesa, at a high altitude and along a stream. This event is for beginners, experts and everyone in between.

New Mexico butterfly expert Steve Cary will be present to help identify butterflies and discuss their life histories.

Planets & Galaxies At Los Alamos Nature Center Friday

PEEC brings two great astronomy shows to the Los Alamos Nature Center this weekend.

At 7 p.m. Friday, July 21, Steve Becker will point out celestial objects that will be visible at the next Pajarito Astronomer’s Dark Night as well as some stars only visible from the southern hemisphere.

The full-dome film We are Astronomers will play at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23.This exciting, family-friendly movie connects us to the evolution of the Universe and explores the secrets of our cosmic chemistry.

Only a few years ago, Chase Harrison could not imagine himself standing at a podium in front of hundreds of people as the student speaker at his own college graduation, with his dream job waiting for him.

The young computer buff from Colorado says he took a leap of faith which resulted in a degree from Northern New Mexico College and a coveted job at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) doing what he loves, not to mention a happy marriage.

Artist and instructor Lisa Coddington is returning to teach a one-day workshop on painting using botanical and natural subjects July 27 at the Los Alamos Nature Center.

This class, made possible by Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), is great for all skill levels. The workshop is 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27. Register to learn techniques for creating realistic, still life and nature-inspired art.

Students Honored With Jim Sims Memorial Engineering Scholarship

Jim Sims, a long time resident of Los Alamos and engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, was remembered May 30, as the scholarship created in his name was awarded to graduating Los Alamos High School seniors Joshua Dyer and Zoe Challacombe.

Sims worked for 34 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a design engineer and leader of project engineering teams. Sims was a gifted Mechanical Engineer with a distinguished career. He was essential to the success of highly visible programs that have enhanced the scientific and engineering reputation of the Laboratory.

ALBBUQUERQUE ― Attorney General Hector Balderas announced that hundreds of New Mexico students will receive refund checks from DeVry University as part of a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlement over deceptive statements made by DeVry about their job prospects and earning potential after graduation.

July 5, the FTC began mailing 173,000 refund checks worth more than $49 million to some students who attended the school between 2008 and 2015. The checks will expire 60 days after they are mailed so it is important for former
