LAVNS: Bereavement Support Services

Bereavement Support Services
By LAVNS

Almost all of us have experienced grief in some form. The loss of a loved one is a universally shared experience, yet we live in a culture that does not encourage an open expression of grief.

The common misconceptions surrounding grief include the idea that we will, over time, “move on”, “carry on” and “get over it.” The underlying message with these expressions of condolence is that grief is a process which has a beginning, middle and end and that a particular period of time will cure that condition. Nothing could be further from the truth.

By Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard, D-Los Alamos
Chairwoman of the House Education Committee
and
Rep. Derrick J. Lente, D-Sandia Pueblo

When Native American students succeed, the state of New Mexico thrives. This principle was the driving force behind House Bill 484. House Bill 484 would have provided a mechanism for New Mexico’s Native American students to obtain the culturally relevant support they need to achieve academic success, helping to close the achievement gap and instilling the importance of education after high school.

But last week, Gov. Susana Martinez vetoed Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pay Equity Makes ‘Cents’

By JUDY PRONO
Public Policy Chair
AAUW-Los Alamos

Equity pay makes “cents” … that’s an understatement. In fact, for women in the workplace, pay equity would increase lifetime earnings by as much as $2 million for those with graduate degrees and by more than $1 million for those with undergraduate degrees.

That would mean more money to pay off student loans, put food on the table, and save for retirement. And pay equity isn’t just a women’s issue—it’s a family issue. Research shows that half of all households with children include a mother who is either the sole or primary breadwinner for her Read More

Open Book: And God Said…

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

The Humanities class at our high school includes a unit about world religions, and it’s been fun to participate as one of the invited speakers who speak about their religious tradition.

Each year, the students are very polite and inquisitive about my lecture on Judaism, and I am totally exhausted by the end of the day. I have no idea how a teacher can do this, five days a week, month after month.

I try to start my lecture with two apologies: Judaism accommodates a spectrum of observance and philosophies so I can’t help but color the presentation by my own views, Read More
