The Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) recently hired three new Resource Advocates. Caron Inglis joins William High Eagle Sandoval and Santina Shije as a Youth Resource Advocate (YRA). Cindy Koehler and Katy Fellows are new Family Resource Advocates (FRAs).

Gov. Susana Martinez doesn’t think teachers are human, too, since she vetoed HB 241 introduced by Republican legislators.
 
The veto is inhumane – hurting both students and educators. House Bill 241 recognizes that teachers might occasionally need to take sick leave.
 
Fortunately the majority in both the House (only three votes against) and Senate (unanimously in favor) do believe teachers are human, too.

Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is working with fisherman Bill Orr, who co-authored the book Fly Patterns of Northern New Mexico, to offer another two-day fly tying class, 1:30-3:30 p.m., March 19 and 26. 
 
Participants will create their own ties designed for local fishing and receive a free copy of Orr’s book. All experience levels are welcome, even those who think they are all thumbs.

Local Trumpet Recital By Miriam Wallstrom Sunday

MUSIC News: 

Miriam Wallstrom, a high school junior, will present her first trumpet recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12 at Fuller Lodge. Playing pieces on both a b flat trumpet and a piccolo trumpet, Wallstrom will perform works by Haydn, Albinoni, Sasche and a Dixieland jazz piece.

Jan McDonald is her music teacher and will accompany her on trumpet for several of her recital pieces. Cindy Little, well-known piano player, also will accompany her on the piano, and her friend Jenny Paige will play duets with her on the euphonium.

Meet Ali Renner, New LAHS Physics Teacher

Ali Renner began teaching Conceptual Physics, Jan. 30, at the Topper Freshman Academy at Los Alamos High School.

Her path to landing the job started with a walk around Ashley Pond. Renner was hanging out with her kids and a friend. Her friend introduced her to Carter Payne, Topper Freshman Academy Principal.

She told him that she used to be a physics teacher. That got his attention. They exchanged emails and right before winter break, he emailed her saying one of the physics teachers was moving. Read More

House Passes Bill For Early High School Graduation

STATE News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to allow New Mexico students the opportunity to graduate early from high school. House Bill 498 is sponsored by Rep. Alonzo Baldonado (R-Valencia), and it passed on a bipartisan 62 to 5 vote.

Baldonado’s bill would permit students to test out of high school if they score in the top twenty percentile of students taking the ACT, SAT, the armed services vocational aptitude battery, or other assessment approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
