Letter to the Editor: Frustration With Mandated Testing

By DARREN MEADOWS
Los Alamos

I thought I would share a note from a friend of mine regarding the state’s flawed teacher/student evaluation plan and encourage all of the community to get involved, informed and evaluate the opt out option.

Dear Mrs. Skandera and Governor Martinez: I am a level 3, National Boards Certified Teacher in my 14th year teaching high school English. I score AP essays each summer and write curriculum.

As one of the highest paid teachers in the state, I am also a divorced mother of two children who can hardly pay rent without side work. So on top of grading 150 essays a week, attending Read More

Meet UNM-LA Advisory Board Position 3 Candidate James Robinson

By JAMES ROBINSON, Candidate
UNM-LA Advisory Board, Position 3

I would first like to thank The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos for inviting me to talk to and meet their chapter last week. It was a great pleasure to meet the members, and enjoy a great lunch.

As I have said before, UNM-LA holds Read More

Hargraves: Middle Level Students

By BILL HARGRAVES, Candidate
LAPS Board Aspen District

My last column discussed education tracks and suggested areas to improve. In this column I want to suggest what approach might be taken to address the needs of the middle level or middle track students.

Middle level students struggle in various ways. Until recently and except for family there was very little assistance or support systems, no safety nets to help. Even now as we start to acknowledge the struggle of these students, our solutions are often ineffective and take too long to initiate. Watching these
