WASHINGTON, D.C. – National History Day (NHD) announced today the teachers selected to receive the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award for their state.
Allen Andraski, a teacher at Los Alamos High School in Los Alamos, was selected as one of two state winners.
“This award means a lot to me as an affirmation of all the hours I have spent working with students in the National History Day program,” Andraski said. “I have been the High School sponsor of NHD for the past 10 years. Meet PEEC Volunteer Selvi Viswanathan
Selvi ViswanathanSelvi Viswanathan is a friendly fixture at PEEC. Not only does she volunteer every week as a docent at the center and serve on the Board of Directors, but she also meticulously tends to the colorful and serene butterfly garden outside of the center.
Viswanathan is always happy to share her vast knowledge of gardening and the local wildlife, among other topics, and she is very passionate about making Los Alamos a certified Community Wildlife Habitat.

The UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board will hold a Special Advisory Board Meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12 in Room 214.

What do butterflies, birds, bears and bindweed have in common? They will all be discussed in a wildlife habitat forum to be held at PEEC at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11. Each local wildlife enthusiast on the panel will discuss his or her respective topic, and then together they will give community members a better idea of how we can give these species a better environment by making Los Alamos a certified Community Wildlife Habitat, an initiative that is already well-underway. Educator Effectiveness System Task Force Forming

Teachers and principals from Los Alamos will be invited to serve on an Educator Effectiveness System (EES) Task Force that will meet in June and July to revise the Los Alamos School District’s evaluation plans for teachers.
This past year marked the first year of state-mandated changes to the teacher observation evaluation plans. Under this new system, teachers were observed in a set of four domains that rated teachers on a five step rubric, ranging from minimally effective to exemplary.

Los Alamos High School graduates were treated to a variety of events throughout the night, Saturday, May 31. Volunteers chaperoned the annual community-sponsored, all-night senior graduation event known as SAN (Senior Appreciation Night).
SAN was created as a fun, safe alternative to dangerous celebrations for graduates. The event is in its 30th year and typically serves 350 students.
SAN is sponsored by the Los Alamos County Recreation

Tessa Snyder is the recipient of the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship.
Ettinger was a long-time resident of Los Alamos. For more than 20 years, she taught third and fourth grade at Barranca Mesa and Mountain Elementary Schools. She read extensively, and was frequently at the Mesa Public Library.

The Stoddard Scholarship for Nursing and Education were the result of the late Sen. Steve Stoddard’s work on the Board of the Caldera National Preserve, where he helped decide the future of a unique and beautiful area of northern New Mexico.

The AAUW campaign to raise $20,000 for the Jean Nereson Books Memorial Fund is nearing its goal, AAUW committee member Nina Thayer said.
Each of the five local elementary schools has already received $1,000 that was used to purchase new books that are now available to the students for library check-out. The completed goal will provide identical funds for purchases of new books each year for the next three years.
