Funds Help Make College Education More Affordable

Gov. Susana Martinez announced the awarding of $750,000 in scholarship funds to New Mexico higher education institutions to help make college education more affordable for New Mexicans.
These scholarships will be given to students in awards of up $1,000. The funding will also be expanded to include fees, books and supplies. The funding, which will be available for Fiscal Year 2015, is a $250,000 increase from funding levels in past years.

As of July 1, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) employees pledged a record $327,000 during the recently completed 2014 Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF) drive.

New Atomic Heritage Foundation Website Previews Manhattan Project Historical Park

With prospects looking good this year for a Manhattan Project National Historical Park, the Atomic Heritage Foundation (AHF) is launching a timely new website for prospective visitors to the Manhattan Project communities at www.atomicheritage.org.
The new park is expected to generate 500,000 or more tourists to Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Hanford, Wash., over the next decade. As a preview of coming attractions, prospective visitors can take a virtual tour and immerse themselves in the Manhattan Project online.

UNM-LA’s Executive Director Stepping Down
Cedric PageAfter seven years as executive director of UNM-Los Alamos, Cedric Page is stepping down July 1 and will assume full-time duties as a tenured professor.
“I plan to teach several geography and social science courses and participate in various service, grant and research activities. Join the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and Valles Caldera Lead Educator Brittney Van Der Werff at PEEC’s Summer Family Evening 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 1 to learn how to simulate the rock cycle using aluminum foil and crayons.

Mountain School’s Green Team certified their campus as a Schoolyard Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation.
Certified schools provide the four elements of a habitat: food, water, cover and places to raise young. Elements of a habitat can be natural features such as trees, flowers, rocks, logs and seasonal wet areas, as well as artificial features such as bird feeders, saucers of water and nesting boxes.

Frank Kuzminski of Los Alamos graduated May 29 from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University with a Master’s in Public Administration degree (MPA).
Kuzminski, son of Jozef and Barbara Kuzminski of White Rock, has served on tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and in Korea as a U.S. Army Infantry Officer. He is also a West Point graduate. Following graduation, he will be on the Army Staff for Strategic Plans and Policy at the Pentagon.

The larvae of the picture-winged fly (Aciurina bigeloviae) have been patiently nesting in galls on the chamisa for the past winter.
