Hawk to Hilltopper Famous Shaving Cream War, Lunch, Fun @ Urban Park May 30

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation & Open Space Division announces that the Hawk to Hilltopper event is set for noon to 3 p.m., May 30 at Urban Park.

This annual event is a celebration for 8th grade students transitioning to high school. Students are treated to a barbeque lunch, inflatable toys and the famous shaving cream war. The event will end with the Los Alamos Fire Department hosing off the students after the shaving cream war.

The event typically ends around 3 p.m. with parents picking up students at the park.

Homeland Security News Wire (HSNW) reports that a newly updated, online, interactive state data tool allows policymakers, educators and other users to discern trends in education, science and research in each of the 50 states and New Mexico is among the top three.

The three states with the highest scores in the number of science and engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded, share of a state’s workforce employed in science and engineering occupations, and the amount of R&D performed, as a share of a state’s gross domestic product (GDP), are Vermont, Virginia and New Mexico. Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard presented the Los Alamos Middle School Science Bowl team and its coach, LAMS science teacher Naomi Unger, with certifictes from the N.M. Legislature commemerating their performance at the Nationals in Washington D.C. The team was 16th in the nation out of 4,000 teams. The team actually beat the second place finishers during an earlier round. Rotary Club Seeks Young Leaders for Week-long Camp

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos is seeking young leaders with an interest in attending a week long camp in the Manzano Mountains in July.

Director Mimi Adams will launch her production of Hoodie, written by Lindsay Price at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16 in room 163 at Los Alamos Middle School on Hawks Drive.

The play also will be performed at 2 p.m. and  7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. The production is free. Everyone is invited.
