The Los Alamos Public School art teachers show work from their programs each year in the Pajarito Room at Fuller Lodge during the Spring Arts and Crafts Fair.
The teachers choose work that represents their programs well, Pinon art teacher Stephanie Rittner said.

The Los Alamos School District will host a special community presentation for all interested parents and community members 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at the Los Alamos Middle School Gymnasium.

SAN Graduation Event Needs Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help with events for the community-sponsored, all-night senior graduation celebration known as SAN (Senior Appreciation Night) for shifts that begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 31.
SAN was created as a fun, safe alternative to dangerous celebrations for graduates. The event is in its 30th year and typically serves 350 students.

LAHS Listening Post Seeks Treat Donations
LAHS News:
Los Alamos High School is seeking donations of snacks for the Listening Post. The Listening Post is staffed with volunteers to lift student morale by offering snacks prior to testing times. Its motto is “Gab/Granola Bar/Grumble.”
The Listening Post is open during morning sessions throughout AP testing and again during finals week. Those who would like to make donations can drop them by the main office at LAHS.

Report: NM Has Made Third Largest Higher Ed Spending Cuts Since Recession

ALBUQUERQUE— New Mexico has cut higher education expenditures by $4,588 per student since 2008, when adjusted for inflation. Only two states—Louisiana and Hawaii—made deeper cuts. And New Mexico is one of the 48 states still spending less per student on higher education than before the recession.
These are among the findings of a report released today by the Washington, D.C.-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP). The report’s authors believe such cuts could jeopardize the nation’s economic future, as fewer adults will have the opportunity to earn college degrees. Read More

The National History Day New Mexico State competition was Friday, April 25 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

The community is invited to the unveiling of 1st Lt. Thurston “Turk” Griffith, Jr.’s painting that will be hung in the lobby of Griffith Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Monday, May 12.
Griffith Gym is named after 1st Lt. Thurston “Turk” Griffith, Jr., a 1958 graduate of Los Alamos High School. Griffith was awarded posthumously by General William Westmoreland the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Each time Patrick Rowe leads a trip for the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), it fills up with a waiting list. On May 17, he will lead an outing that’s new for PEEC, this time to the Small Fry Prospect near Espanola to look for fluorescent deep purple fluorite samples.
The group will meet at PEEC at 8:30 a.m. to caravan, or it also is possible to meet at the site at 10 a.m. This trip is suitable for all ages, and the chance of finding samples makes it a great outing for kids as well as adults.
