Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries Annual Scholarships Deadline Extended

SCHOLARSHIP News:

The deadline for applications for the Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries annual scholarships has been extended to 5 p.m. Monday, April 14.

The Friends will award up to four scholarships of $2,500 again this year and also will administer the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship.

Any senior enrolled and in good standing at Los Alamos High School, a local private high school, or an approved home study program, who plans to continue his or her education at a recognized institution by September of the year following graduation may apply.

Two iconic American photos provocatively grace the covers of recent Iliad translations. The first, Robert Sargent’s famous picture of U.S. troops’ 1944 amphibious landing at Normandy, introduces a contemporary, colloquial version of Homer’s poem by Stanley Lombardo. The second photograph, Neil Leifer’s 1965 snapshot of Muhammad Ali standing over and taunting a supine Sonny Liston, prefaces Edward McCrorie’s very recent 2012 translation.

Eta Zeta Scholarship Application Deadline April 1

It’s no joke! The Beta Sigma Phi Eta Zeta Chapter is accepting applications through April 1 for their Memorial Scholarship, which goes to a female Los Alamos graduating senior pursuing education beyond high school, including vocational and technical programs.

The basis for the award is a personal statement which includes information about community service, goals, aspirations and memorable personal experiences of helping others. Eta Zeta also considers need and other scholarships awarded.

Breaking News: LAPS Superintendent Keeps Job!

All five members of the Los Alamos Board of Education just voted to retain Superintendent Gene Schmidt as interim superintendent for a year.

The Board will use that time period to conduct a nationwide search for a permanent superintendent to take over mid 2015.

Schmidt resigned earlier this month after it became evident that he did not have the full support of the board to renew his current contract, which runs out June 30.
