Literacy NM Summer Program Open To LAPS Students
LAPS News:
Los Alamos Public Schools is excited to participate in this year’s Literacy NM Summer Program. This program will provide small group specialized reading and writing instruction for students who have completed kindergarten through 8th grade. This program will take the place of the traditional summer school or camp that the district has provided in recent years.
All LAPS students who would like to improve their reading and writing skills are invited to enroll on the state portal NM Summer Reading Program Website (www.literacy.nm.gov).

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Community College’s Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) program will host an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 26 at the Trades and Advanced Technology Center (TATC).
The public is invited to meet in the lobby of the TATC to begin the CEA Open House activities. State Summer Reading Program Registration Is Now Open

SANTA FE — Today, state education agencies announce that registration is open for the 2025 Summer Reading Program, a free initiative designed to serve 15,000 students from incoming kindergarteners to outgoing eighth graders with focused reading instruction in small groups with trained literacy instructors.

Spring is here and black bears of the Pajarito Plateau are waking up from long winter naps. Bears eat almost anything available (i.e. insects, nuts and berries, plant matter, fish, birds, small mammals and carrion), but rarely kill larger prey.
Bears that have found available human sources, such as trash cans, gardens and fruit trees, are more likely to seek them again.
Tips and tricks to minimize encounters as bears begin to look for food:
- Never intentionally feed bears to attract them

The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD), in collaboration with multiple agencies, will be conducting specialized, scenario-based training focused on responding to a drowning victim at the Los Alamos County Aquatic Center.
This critical training exercise will take place March 24-29 and will involve LAFD personnel, Los Alamos County (LAC) Dispatchers, lifeguards and emergency room physicians from Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC).

The LAPS Prevention Program recently hosted an important presentation on the findings of the 2023 New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (NM-YRRS), a biennial survey that provides critical insights into the health and well-being of middle and high school students across the state.
