Christine Bernstein filed for the District 3 (Aspen) seat on the Los Alamos School Board today at the County Municipal Building. Bernstein was the final candidate to file before the 5 p.m. deadline. ‘I’m a teacher and I’ve wanted to be part of the decision making about my profession for 15 years!’ Bernstein said. ‘Now is the time!’ Bernstein teaches high school Spanish in Pojoaque. ‘Now that I’m not teaching in a district I live in, I can run and still be in the classroom,’ she said. ‘The faces I see at school every day ARE education. Candidate Pat Soran, seated, and Campaign Manager Rick Reiss were at the Los Alamos Municipal Building this afternoon to file for Soran’s current seat, Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board. Soran was appointed to the Board when the winner of the last election moved away. David Hampton is a candidate for Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board. He filed this afternoon with the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office. Since his retirement from Los Alamos National Laboratory 2.5 years ago, Hampton has been seeking opportunities to become more involved with the community, he said. He currently serves on the board of the Los Alamos Food Co+op. On the UNM-LA Advisory Board, Hampton would seek to continue and build upon collaborations between the college and Los Alamos National Laboratory and the business community to fill the need for skilled workers. Melanie Colgan filed as a candidate for School Board to serve the Barranca and North Mesa communities (District 4) this afternoon at the Los Alamos Municipal Building. Colgan has five chidren in the Los Alamos schools and has been an active volunteer with the school district. Now she would like to expand her role to include making policy as a member of the School Board, Colgan said. Julia Baker filed as a candidate for school board representing District 4, which includes Barranca and North Mesas. ‘My family has been blessed by the schools here,’ Baker said. ‘I have a background in teaching so I think I’d be a good fit for the school board.’ Baker taught fifth grade in Utah and currently stays at home to take care of her five children, ages 3-13. Stephen Boerigter filed for re-election to Position Four on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board this morning at the Los Alamos Municipal Building. Laura Burrows filed for Position 3 on the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board this morning. She also filed by proxy for Chris Luchini who is running for Position 4 on the UNM-LA Advisory Board. Burrows said she is running to become more involved with the Los Alamos community. A longtime teacher, Burrows currently serves as a substitute teacher for both the Los Alamos Public Schools and UNM-LA’s ESL and High School Equivalency programs. She has two kids at Pinon Elementary School in fourth and fifth grade. Burrows said both she and Luchini are anxious to serve and to have their voices heard. Morrie Pongratz is the first to file this morning at the County Municipal Building as a candidate for Los Alamos School Board. Pongratz resides in the Aspen District and served on the School Board from 2003-2007. During that term the board helped start the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and the LAPS Foundation. Pongratz now serves on the boards of both organizations as well as several other boards. Pongratz is now fully retired and said laughing that his wife encouraged him to run for school board. The staff of the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office opened the doors at 9 a.m. this morning on Candidate Fiiling Day for UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board and Los Alamos School Board. Candidates have until 5 p.m. today to file for three positions on the School Board and two on the UNM-LA Advisory Board.
