By CAROL A. CLARKTop officials in the Republican Party of Los Alamos have resigned amidst a firestorm of insults hurled across Facebook over the past several weeks.
“I believe there is too much hatred and vitriol in politics today from both Parties,” GOP Vice Chair James Chrobocinski said. “Unfortunately, during this rec bond election, I experienced attacks against me personally as well as against my family. I wholeheartedly agree with debating issues on the issues but believe it’s important to disagree without being disagreeable.”

Sheehey: Let’s Settle The Debate About The Role Of The Sheriff In Los Alamos

The present Sheriff, Marco Lucero, was elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014, stressing the importance of the Sheriff’s role in Los Alamos. County Councils, not including myself, have worked to minimize that role, drastically cutting his budget and ultimately calling an election last November to eliminate the office. Letter To The Editor: Rec Bond Plea To County Council – Can’t We Compromise?
By LAUREN GRIFFITHFollowing the recent recreation bond election outcome, I wondered if there is a possible compromise that we could look at.
From discussions with and reading opinions by ‘no’ voters, it sounds like there were two main issues with the bond (I realize there were others, but these seemed to be the biggest):
a) it was ‘all or nothing’ and many of them might have been happy with some of the projects, but not all of them; and
b) it was going to increase property taxes, resulting in debt for us and future generations.

Los Alamos County voters defeat the Recreation Bond in the 2017 Special Election. The vote is 3,446 for to 3,932 against. Those opposed to the bond seem to have two main arguments against it:
- Need: they state there is not a need for the projects that are proposed; and
- Cost: our taxes and the cost are too high.
We feel that both arguments are incorrect as we look to the future of our community. As a parent, we can say there is definitely a need!! When we first moved to Los Alamos almost 25 years ago, we were surprised that more of the capital improvements

Members of the public are invited to gather Tuesday evening at the Los Alamos County Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave., to view election results on the Recreational Bond.
Council Chambers and the lobby will be open. Results are not expected to be posted until after 7:30 p.m. Once available, the unofficial results will be projected onto the screen in Council Chambers and the LCDs in the lobby. Printouts also will be made available.

We can all agree, crime seems to be everywhere, and seems to be getting worse. This week, the Albuquerque Police Department announced they would be directing officers to issue citations rather than make arrests on low-level crimes to comply with a settlement agreement on a class-action lawsuit. Many people are asking now, why would a city do this in a time where crime seems to be rising?
This lawsuit, McClendon v. City of Albuquerque, was filed on behalf of prisoners in the Bernalillo County Detention Center in 1995, and focuses on overcrowding and other issues in the county
