Letter To The Editor: I’m Supporting Sharon Stover

By PEGGY PENDERGAST
Los Alamos

I have known Candidate Sharon Stover for 35 years.

I have known and worked for Sharon Stover as Los Alamos County’s Parks & Recreation interim director.

I have known Sharon Stover as assistant to the County Administer.

I have known Sharon Stover as she wisely – always watching expenditures – served for more than one term on the Los Alamos County Council.

I have known Sharon Stover as she contributed for many years on the YMCA Board and as she brought to Los Alamos the statewide LEADERSHIP program.

I have known Sharon Stover as she facilitated Read More

Letter To The Editor: Is Mr. Lucero A ‘Constitutional Sheriff’? Why Not Ask Him?

By KHAL SPENCER
Los Alamos

Stephanie Nakhleh painted a grim picture of Sheriff Marco Lucero as being part of an anti-government “…dangerous group of radicals…” called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. Of course, most of what we learn from her letter is Ms. Nakhleh’s opinion of CSPOA, and we learn even less about Sheriff Lucero other than that his name appears on several web sites. This tactic to discredit the man is a form of ad hominem attack referred to as the “bad company fallacy” and is reminiscent of McCarthyism

Letter To The Editor: Sharon Stover Is Best Choice

By LAWRY MANN
Los Alamos

Sharon Stover is running against the incumbent in the New Mexico House race for District 43. Often an argument for retaining an incumbent is because of his or her connections. In the present case, Sharon has far more contacts than the present incumbent.

As County Council Chair, Sharon worked closely with Gov. Martinez during and after the 2011 fire. Sharon served as president of the New Mexico Association of Counties. She served on the North Central Economic Development District Executive Committee with four current New M exicoLegislators. This important committee, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Naomi Maestas For County Clerk

By MIKE ADAMS
Los Alamos

I’m a Democrat, and have been since I registered to vote. I probably will be until I am but a memory. I am a Democrat and I’m voting for Naomi Maestas!

I know Naomi, and one thing everyone says about her is that she is sweet, but there are a few other things that you should know, and these are what is important:

  • She cares about democracy. I sat down with Naomi to ask her about why she is running for the position and she told me that she talked about her pride in participating in democracy. She honestly feels privileged to participate in having people vote for their

Heinrich Fights For Consumers Slapped With Hidden Exorbitant Rental Car Fees

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich

From the Office of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich

  • Hidden Fees Can Often Exceed 500 Percent Of The Toll Itself

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is concerned about hidden fees currently being charged by rental car companies for the use of toll paying technology, which can often exceed 500 percent of the toll itself.

In a letter to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, Heinrich called on the agency to determine whether rental car companies using these fee structures are unnecessarily price gouging consumers and engaging in unfair and Read More

Letter To The Editor: About Incident At LWV Forum

By JOHN N. HORNE
Los Alamos County Undersheriff

It is ironic that at the same time the League of Women Voters was having its debate on the merits of retaining the Sheriff’s Office Police Chief Sgamblione would play out the exact scenario that proves that this police chief and others require a sheriff to provide oversight.

On Oct. 6 at 7:15 Thursday night I was sitting in the second row of the debate audience when I was approached by two Los Alamos police officers. I was dressed in full uniform, my badge was clearly displayed, and I was wearing a duty belt, which included

Letter To The Editor: Keep Stephanie Garcia Richard Working For Us In The State House

By KRISTIN HENDERSON
Los Alamos

I wholeheartedly endorse Stephanie Garcia Richard to continue to represent Los Alamos in the New Mexico State House.

Stephanie works hard for Los Alamos. She fights for education and for small businesses. As a County Councilor, I have found in the last four years she has worked closely with the County Council to further our interests at the State, and the Federal, level.

Stephanie is smart, well-educated, hard working and has forged strong relationships with her fellow Representatives to move Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico forward.

Letter To The Editor: NM Election System Is Safe

By the League of Women Voters of New Mexico, and
Common Cause New Mexico

With all the national publicity about the possibility of attacks on the election systems, it is necessary to let New Mexicans know that our election system is secure. Through bipartisan efforts over the last 10 years, New Mexico’s election system has become one that is envied by most other states.

As to the vote counting system, New Mexico has voting machines that electronically tabulate paper ballots that are fed into the machines at the voting sites. The voting machines are not connected to the Internet, but should Read More

Pereyra: What Happened To Us?

By Ramiro A. Pereyra III (Trey)
Los Alamos

What Happened to us?

Since I was around 10 years old, my morning always started the same way. I would wake up, get ready, and then go down and watch the news. I remember at 10 or 11 watching the news and seeing some of the sad things in the world, but not as much as there is today.

It hurts me everyday to see so many people suffering and I continue to think “why?” Why do we hate each other so much? Why are acting so horribly to one another? What happened to the love we had for one another? What happened to us?

Over the last several months

Michael Moore In Trumpland Viewing Wednesday

Courtesy image

DPLA News:

The Democratic Party of Los Alamos County will host a viewing of Michael Moore in Trumpland beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a pot luck followed at 7 p.m. with the movie.

Everyone is invited and asked to bring a dish to share. The event is at the DPLA headquarters at 170 Central Park Square.

Moore’s new film seeks to humanize Trump supporters and Hillary Clinton and mend our divisions — and it succeeds.

“TrumpLand” comes off at first as a simple gesture to persuade Trump voters to think twice before casting their ballot — but that is just the surface. At its core, the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote No On Question 1

By DANIEL SCHMIDT
Los Alamos

I recently moved to Los Alamos from Los Angeles. I am a retired Los Angeles Police Officer.

I have seen the politicization of the LAPD when they removed Chief Daryl Gates after the 1994 riots, which was initially a lifetime appointment. This lifetime appointment was done for the specific reason of not having the specter of corruption over the chief’s office and being corrupted by the elected city officials.

This has changed and the chief’s position is a 5-year term of service, with the possibility of a second 5-year term. What

Letter To The Editor: Cowboy Breakfast With No Sheriff?

By A Concerned Citizen
Los Alamos

A question that I have had over the last few weeks as we have seen more and more discussion of whether to abolish the office of the sheriff is this: If we no longer have a sheriff, how will that affect the Sheriff’s Posse?

And importantly, what about Cowboy Breakfast! I worry about the trickle down effects – no sheriff leading to no posse leading to no pancakes!

Now, I’m not saying that we should base our votes one way or the other based simply on a fantastic meal every month, but it is a point that I hadn’t

By DENNIS H. GILL

I have had the pleasure of serving with Sharon Stover in our local Kiwanis club for many years. Sharon energizes every group she is in, and she has been a tremendous asset to our club.

Sharon has been an integral part of all Kiwanis activities. When Sharon became chair of our scholarship committee, she immediately began to improve and streamline our practices. She moved us to a paperless process that helped save time and trees. Sharon is also the person who coordinates interview schedules, notifies scholarship recipients, and creates the biography sheets
